Grove Street

Hello 'with in the wall' and welcome to the forum I've split this from the Cox St club thread (which I expect to be merged with the exisitng Working Men's Clubs thread). As a resident of Gosford Street for more than seven years you may be amazed to learn I was almost totally oblivious to the existence of Grove Street other than as an access road to Poole's! I didn't even explore the area which opened out behind Gosford Stret literally yards from where I lived! Could you tell us which particular number you lived at in Grove Street as I may have found a picture of interest to you? Also, do you remember the caravan sales yard near the top of Cox Street or the Shamrock Club?

Does anyone know what the factory at the end of Grove Street was used for? I am asking because we demolished it and I do not recall what it was. The end of the street was gated which led into the place, after we had finished that site we demolished a pop factory that we made access to which was at the rear of Cox Street, I seem to think it was the Corona factory, not sure.

Hi. I was only one when I left Grove St and have no memories but feel very connected to the area, I think because it's where families lived. My brother was six and went to All Saints School. We lived at 32 Grove St and my brother remembers the pop factory, Corona. We moved June 1960.

Thanks for that, When firms leave some premises they leave no sign of what was manufactured there, I only knew it was a pop factory because the ground at the rear was built up with broken bottles. It was an older type building and can remember the roof trusses were wooden with reinforced glass and slate.

I could only find this one which is nos. 24-29, which is a shame it wasn't 32, I am sure dutchman will find some more for you.

Hi Norm. Grove Street played a big part in my early life, I had three relatives working in the street. My uncle was a brassfounder who made moulds into sand in the floor of the foundry and brass castings were produced, I am fairly certain this was called the Phoenix Foundry. I have two relief carthorses cast there that he made and presented to my mother. My aunt worked lower down on the rhs at a printing works called Parbury making books and ledgers for writing in, she was a bookbinder. Another uncle worked up there further along and he was in a warehouse that dealt with all kinds of cheeses, I am afraid I cannot remember the name of that company. I recall Corona occupying the foundry site after Phoenix closed down.

Thanks for that herberts lad, I had no idea it used to be a foundry, nor did I know Corona used the premises afterwards. I probably did know at the time, it has been a long time ago and the old memory is fading. N.

I think it was a depot for Corona and at the time they belonged to the Beecham Group. I seem to recall they had been something like Thomas and Evans Ltd before that. They moved the depot to Falkland Close off Charter Avenue.

But none of 32 I'm afraid. What a lot of people won't realise is that Grove Street was a cul-de-sac so only someone who lived there or did business there would venture into it. I must have passed it hundreds of times but only entered once with Charlie Bednell to collect some electrical components from Poole's for his mothers shop. There was a parallel row of cottages further up Cox Street opposite New Street called Corpus Christi Lane which is seldom marked on old maps.

I remember Grove St, I used to do my paper round and delivered to one house, can't remember which one but I remember Corona well. We sometimes went over the yard on Sundays, as we did with the old Priory Baths in Priory St. In the summer we used to walk up the River Sherbourne, usually ftom Astley's orchard and up the back of Godiva St because the river was very low.

I only knew one family that lived in Grove Street, Big Jim Lynas, ex-boxer cum bouncer, does anyone remember Jim and his family?

Showed the photo of Grove St to my mum who told me who lived there, it was really enjoyable afternoon listening to her stories. Our house was just in the block out of shot. Silly me thought those cars were part of the st, but they're in a fenced off area for parking

I am really pleased you had a pleasant afternoon with your mum, re-living the old days. I have had another look at the photo and seen the posts behind the cars, I wouldn't have known either about that. What a shame your house isn't on. Maybe one day.

Hi Cabbie, out of curiosity, which newsagent did you deliver papers for? I also had to deliver one paper in Grove St which was well off my normal round, for an old lady. To help my mate out who delivered for the other newsagent in Lower Ford St I delivered one of his papers to the Cox St Club because that was well off his round as well.
