I remember as kids we used to go to the Canley Club on Saturday nights, there was a queue to get in before the doors opened because there would be competition for seats Then some Sunday dinner times we'd be at the Willenhall Club where they'd have a steel drum band playing outside

I remember the Aldermoor Social Club, and they also ran outings to Wicksteed Park as an annual treat. The club also had a very good bowling green and I remember travelling with my father to other clubs and pubs for crown-green matches.

I also recall the Jaguar & Daimler Club going most week ends as a child, in Radford, the first club burned down which I can recall being a large hall with a stage and a billard room, they then rebuilt it to what it is today if it's still there.

Just looking online, and it's sad to see the the club has closed and had a serious fire. In its day the 50s and 60s, Stoke Ex-servicemen's had a great boxing club, producing some great boxers, some who were ABA champions. Who can remember the Maras, Ted, Barry, Brian, Alan?, and Johnny Carey, Terry Schofield, Jimmy Howe etc.

Possibly the Commer Club ? From the A-Z of Coventry Bands "THE RAPIERS circa 1964 Source Broadgate Gnome Tony Fennell told Broadgate Gnome, "... an unusual line up of two guitars and drums - no bass and no vocals - playing instrumentals - mainly Shadows material. Guitarists names were both Alan - one Alan Payne .. can't remember other's name. Used to play at The Commer Club in Wyken?"

Does anyone remember the club in Hill Street next to St Osburg's School and directly opposite the gasometer? I'm thinking it may have had something to do with the gas works?

I wonder if anyone remembers my late father - Johnny Mac, his bands played loads of working mens clubs in the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's. He was most noted for playing at the Keresley Coronation Club, the Vauxhall WMC and the Wyken Club. Big grin

Hi Andy Mac I bet my late husband Gary would have known your Dad. He played around lots of the working men's clubs in the 60s and 70s. He was the drummer in a group called The Countdowns. They played mostly Shadows music but could manage any of the popular dance tunes that were requested. Wave

Me too! I had exams in the WMC, some horrible building around the back of the Hope and Anchor and then in the Sports Centre. I remember waiting by the foot of the elephant to be let in! I hope Cov Uni's facilities have improved since 1992!

Back in the very early 60's (and before and after i am sure?) the club in Stoney Stanton Rd that I assume was called 'The Stoney Stanton Club' had an organ that lit up as I can remember? I remember the organist seemed to be quite well known?? Does anyone know his name? Is this club still there? I remember climbing very steep stairs and buying cheese and onion sandwiches. Did anyone else go there? My friend and I as 12/13 year olds did and few song and dance acts there. We were paid sooooo much money. We felt like mega stars!!! Gilly Wave

Hi Gilly, The only working mens club I can think of is the Stanton Club just down from Cambridge Street, and I think it was something to do with the nearby bus station. I cannot recall ever going in there although I was born in Leicester Causeway up by the bridge, maybe other members know more.

Unfortunately not ..... we do still have exams there, there is a huge shortage of big rooms available for large group exams. We have the same problem for lectures!
