Hello Bad boy, Probably when Alan Bond was in the limelight with his secret keel! You seem to have picked all the right places although you should give it a while before you think of a return visit as we have had an unusual amount of "JAWS" visits this year and they have even considered shark nets. I do not believe in the culling procedure as it is their domain after all. However, when they start 'slopping' down West Coast Highway that's different. Now then, back to fish 'n' chips. Come to think of it I have not had any for a few weeks Sad

I was told during my researches that my photo was of 14 Cox Street, Anne Elizabeth Evans' Pork Shop but the style of the building looks nothing like others on the Forum. If not Cox Street, where?

Does anyone remember the fish and chip shop in Gulson Road? I think it was on the corner of Carmelite Road. In the 50s it was run by an old lady, then I think it was taken over by Greeks, but her fish and chips were the best. My dad used to bring some home on a Friday night on his way back from work Smile

I have just remembered the name of the chip shop, it was Coopers. My mum used to take our newspapers there so they could use them to wrap the chips in.

I think this fish & chip shop was left to my grandfather in the 1950s by his aunt (Jessie Waters). I think her husband had left it to her when he died and I believe his name was Ernest. Judging by the information here it must have been at no 31 Cox Street. I believe it had been rented out & run by someone else for a long time. The property was bought by compulsory purchase in the late 1950s to make way for the new Lanchester College. I think the compensation he received for the property was only about £200.00

A view of the Walsall Arms, incorporating a bus and is it a postbox on the right? Also, is the chip shop at No. 31 anywhere in the vicinity of the location of this photo? Walsall Arms, Cox Street

The Walsall was at No 89 (opposite Godiva Street) so some distance from No 31, albeit on the same side of the road. It had ceased to be a pub by 1951 but the yard behind it continued to be used for private housing well into the 1960s.

I am getting infatuated with traffic signs and bus stops and telephone boxes Roll eyes There appears to be a lot of writing on the road sign but I can't decipher it. 76, 78, 80 Cox Street

I always thought it was a four-sided post box but at least one map confirms it as being a police call box. The no waiting sign has a lift-up plate which reveals the days of the week on which waiting is prohibited. It was alternated with a sign on the other side of the street. The photography shop window had some 'interesting' boxes of 8mm films in the window. Big grin

Looks like a time zone sign to me Foxcote. I can make out the middle shop sign, Film House, judging by the picture frames in the window. I am curious what is written on the sign above the business on the left. Of course no one could miss the ciggy sign on the right. (Time for a new eye test methinks) Wave

Thanks to MR and the Dutchman for all the details, I like the lift-up plate sign, I have never seen those before and the police boxes seem to be popping up in loads of photos lately Thumbs up

Hi all, Wave Pam was working quite late into last evening, (she keeps me in the way that I am accustomed) & it was a delight to see a queue waiting at our local chippy "Venus", so a quick decision was made to park & join the queue. So glad that we did. Two cod & a small chips went down in minutes. Bril! Edit on 6th March 2014 Some bad publicity as well as a recent prosecution has removed this Fish & Chipy from our favourites. Sad
