Coventry City FC (The Bantams, Sky Blues)

Hi all, I'm in awe of the achievements of our football club, in spite of every obstacle being put in their way, seasons when they didn't know what was their home ground. I look at the Sky blues from a business prospective, not sport, (I think I know what the ball does, but that's about it), but I honestly believe that Mark Robins, will one day be recognised as the most competent total management manager of any from the past in Coventry. I was about to get married when Coventry joined the then top flight, over fifty years ago. I'm disappointed for those distraught from being so close to the top flight, but take cheer. The nail biting game at Wembley matched any cup final match, between two champion teams. Best wishes to Luton, I can hear Eric Morecambe shouting "Luton". Best wishes to our Sky Blues. The champions of Coventry.

Although the result is hard to take having come so close, Luton were the better side and we didn't quite have enough in the tank to see them off. Whilst you were preparing for marriage all those years ago, I was taking my first steps into Highfield Road as a 6 year old, thinking that every season would be like that historic one. What I do know is that for the last six years we have been on an upwards trajectory, very ably led as you say by Mark Robins. There will be a significant upheaval in playing staff during the Summer, but I think the most important signings have already been made, namely the four year deals agreed by Robins and his right hand man Adi Viveash. They have brought so much professionalism, consistency and belief to our club that has not been seen for a long time. Coupled with the other off field events which have gone in our favour during the last six months or so, I'm very optimistic we can go one better next season. PUSB.

I had used to go as a child with dad. We parked our bikes in the gardens in Thackhall St. In return for a small charge.

And for me Philip, it's a magical thing being part of your football club, the handing down through the generations and fond memories that will stay with us forever.

Considering where they were earlier in the season I think it is massive achievement to finish where they did. I lived across the street in Swan Lane in the 60s and was always excited when they played at home. I will never forget the day when I was going to a game and even before I left the house I could hear the Kinks singing All Day and All of the Night coming from the huge speakers in the stadium. We only had a small front yard but I used to store bikes for fans on game day. Another great memory was when Ernie Hunt scored that fantastic donkey free kick with Willie Carr. l still enjoy watching it again on YouTube. I always stood on the kop end right behind the goal, even in the pouring rain ☔️ I was a kid I didn't care.

So Mr. Bike Keeper, you too earned a few pence watching precious bikes. My mum also did that chore in the little front garden in King Richard St. just a road away from Highfield Road. They would buy their ciggies and leave their bikes. Who cared about the weather watching a kick like that.

I was at Wembley again on Saturday with my youngest son Laurence. TBH I'm still gutted but it was a great day out - result aside and hopefully a next step on to achieve promotion next season. PUSB!!!

I see the Sky Blues are making another potential run for a return to the First Division! Four wins out of the last five games! PUSB! We might be able to watch games in Australia once more!

Was wondering, are there many people on here, whom would remember Charlie Timmins? Our bald headed full back? Many years ago, I have a memory of a full back scoring a goal with a very long range shot. Anyone else have any knowledge of such a thing?

Hi Slash1, a bit before my City days I'm afraid. Found this clip on the net. Sounds a great player of his time. Timmins spent 11 years at Coventry, including three years as club captain. During the 1955-56 season, Timmins was touted by press as the "best full back outside the top flight"

I do remember Charlie Timmins, but only just - I would have been 8 years old at the start of the 1955-56 season and my dad used to take me to Highfield Road. I do remember once when the Coventry goalkeeper took a goal kick, noting that his opposite number was way outside his goalmouth, and kicked the proverbial out of it. The ball bounced once in front of the opposition goalie, went over his head and scored! I think that might have been Arthur Lightning, who lived just down the road from us in Wyken.

Hi Johnny - according to Wikipedia Arthur Lightning never scored for Coventry. Another keeper maybe?

I wonder who it was! I was there and saw it! The only other name that comes to mind was Alf Wood, who I believe was the trainer, brought into the team in a crisis. Bald as a coot, he appeared to be in his late sixties, but I'm sure he saved a penalty in one game!
