Click on the link asking any forum members here and Mr Chester's class is among the selection of school photos. In order to not bore other forum members to death with this thread I'm going to contact you via your mail to see if you can answer a query re these photos Thumbs up

On 6th May 2011 1:23pm, DBC said: I started attending the above boy's school in 1955. For the first year we didn't use the main school in Briton Road, but in an annexe somewhere in Wyken, near Sewall Highway. The actual buildings were of single story construction which had the look of some kind of army camp or similar institution. I remember they were very cold in winter and not particularly comfortable in summer. Does anyone else remember this annexe, and do you know the actual location of these buildings?
Yes the annexe was behind Wyken Grange Road. I went to Briton Road school in 1954, my last teacher was Miss Carter and left to go to Caludon Castle in 1960. I have somewhere a photo of my class must find it. A few names come to mind,Fred Acton, Gillian Crook, Philip Porter, Pat Davies, Julie Gardener, Brenda Redfern. When I find the photo some more names might come to mind.

I went to Briton Rd primary and junior schools from 1954 to 1964, I remember the sweet shop well, and having school photos taken in the yard, there was a large oak tree down by the primary unit and some horrendous communal toilets in the yard. As for sports day, we were walked to Ansty Rd and used a playfield there, can't remember the name of the school but it was a fairly new one right on the corner.

Morning covgirl The playingfield was the annex for Stoke Secondary Modern. Remember it well. We used to climb over the wire fence to play football in the evenings. Happy days. I was at Stoke Infants and Juniors '54-61. Started in Miss Ellis's class. Do you recall any names of your classmates? I remember the oak tree well. One particular playtime we lads were playing cowboys and Indians and 'captured' one of the girls and tied her to the tree. Unfortunately we couldn't undo the knots and the poor girl had to be released by one of the teachers. My mates and I had to sit in the classroom the next playtime with our hands on our heads.

I started at Stoke Junior School about 1964.The Headmaster was Mr. Ison, who was a very tall man. My class teacher was Mr. Cooper. I then went up to Stoke Secondary Modern Girls School in 1965. The Headmistress was Mrs. McDermott, who always wore a black flowing gown. My first teacher was Miss Ellison. Our classroom was in the main school in Briton Road and we went to the annexe in Dane Road for needlework with Miss Smith, who didn't like me as I couldn't sew, and for games on the field, and very cold showers afterwards in the shed-like changing room. I seem to remember there was about 3 or 4 classrooms at the annexe, we used to prefer it there away from the evil gaze from Miss Hough the Deputy head, who taught typewriting at Briton Road. Our music teacher was Mr. Bailey, who Miss Hough had a crush on. We had domestic science at Briton Road in its own two little class rooms in the playground, with a little flat where two pupils spent a week running it and entertaining teachers to lunch which we had prepared. Susan Hill now famous as an author was our English teacher. We had art with Mr. Tooby at the annexe. I think the school became joined with the boys and became Stoke Secondary Modern about 1967,although I might be wrong. We still had girls only classes at that time.

With reference to my previous post the Deputy Head at Stoke Secondary Modern Girls was Miss Woodford not Miss Hough, was she at the junior school? I seem to have her name on my brain.

Hi Wimero, I don't remember many names unfortunately, my best friend was Lynne and another named Sue, also a boy named David, he was my nemesis, and pulled my hair. I do remember being tied to the tree, it was a regular occurrence I seem to remember, but I was always released, I was something of a tomboy and would probably have raised hell if I'd been left there. I do remember Miss Ellis, boy she was scary, she made me stand in a corner for the whole lesson once because my sister had been ill and I took her home. My report that term was horrendous, I still have some of them somewhere, must try to find them, always good for a laugh.

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site. I went to Briton Road from 65-72 when we had to go to Ernesford Grange. Does anyone remember that?

I started in Stoke Infants in 1963ish, remember the reception class. There was a sandpit in the garden but we never used it!! Went to the juniors, remember the metal climbing frame, not health and safety then! Went to Stoke Secondary Modern from 1969 until 1974. Mr Beveridge was headmaster. My first teacher was Miss Pickering who married and became Mrs Taylor, she was also my last form teacher in the 4th and 5th years. Lots of other memories I'd like to share sometime. Anybody else at school same time as me?

Back row, 2nd from the left Peter Bench, 4th Margaret Key, 7th Margaret Smith, end of row Graham Shaw. 3rd row, 4th from left Richard Barton, 5th Peter Read. 2nd row, 1st Jesse Anderson, 2nd Roy Coleman, 4th Terence Alexander, 8th Trevor McElroy. Front row, 4th Carol Ingram, 6th Robert Sellars. Other faces very familiar, but I cannot be sure of the names, it has been a while.

Hi all, This is my first post ever. Recently I found this school report in my old saved family bits. I have lived in NZ for most of my life after arriving in 1949. However I was born in Leamington in December 1940 (I suspect my mother was sent there after the Blitz for my birth). My mother's maiden name was Woodman and we lived in Kingfield Road, her parents at 186 and her sister a few houses away I think 168??? Anyway can anyone tell me does this report relate to this Stoke School or was there another one??? David

Welcome to our forum David, and congratulations on your first ever post. Wave My dad is just one month older than you and also attended Stoke school in Briton Road (as did I later), so you'd both have been contemporary. He's William Orland, probably known as Billy back then, and I'll be seeing him in the very near future so I'll do my best to remember to ask if he recognises your name or that style or report. Meanwhile, I hope you continue to enjoy the memories on here.... All the best, Rob
