Sewall Highway

Oops sorry about previous post, I was at Stoke Heath School and not Courthouse.

Hi folks. I am enjoying reading all these memories. I lived at no. 41 Sewall Highway when I was very young, 1945 or 6 to 1948 or 9. Anyone else remember that far back? I played with the Aldhouse (spelling uncertain) children next door (no. 39 I think). Their names were Rita and John. There was a little boy called Andrew on the other side. I remember we had a privet hedge in front as did many of the neighbouring houses. I also remember picking up 'window' - tinfoil strips from the war, caught on the bushes on some kind of common land where we went for walks - I don't know how far from home it was, though. Sadly I have no school memories from there, as we moved before I was old enough to start. I wonder which one I would have gone to?

Just a bit of history about Mellors grocery. During their best years of trading, Mellors had the Blackberry Lane shop. Margery Mellors ran the dress shop next door. Herbert her brother owned the grocers. In the 1960's they had Brixham Drive store and later the big supermarket at the junction of Nuffield Road and Stoney Stanton Road. I worked at the Brixham Drive one, with the manager Mr Upton when I was 15 as a Saturday lad. Happy days!

I remember Linda Salvador and her next door neighbour Rhona Hunter I think. If I remember right they lived in Parry Rd / Brixham Drive. Linda was at Lyng Hall with my sister. Linda's dad was Spanish.

IIRC the Salvaor's lived on Parry Rd where it met Bideford Rd. Linda had a brother Chris who had a beach buggy.

Hi bohica. I went to school with Linda Salvadore at Courthouse Green, she had a brother called John and in those days the Salvadores lived in Weavers Walk, they moved to Parry Road in 1960.

Maybe I'm wrong about the brother's christian name - it was a long time ago.

The last I heard of Lynda was she was married and living in Withybrook, I think that was in the 80's though.

Well this has been an interesting evening, reading this thread, can't believe I've never noticed it before (I pop in for a read every couple of months, but rarely post). I went to Courthouse Green with the lads in the photo on page 3, and I submitted the school photo in the photo mysteries section. I went on to Lyng Hall when it was first built, and consider myself lucky to have attended two newly built schools. So sad to hear Alan Kirby died young. And Miss Hasten - working out her age she was about 30 years older than us infants, ie under 40 when she was our headmistress but she seemed so OLD! I liked Mr Batt; he was entertaining. Does anyone remember Mr Young? I think he was Scottish. He could be sidetracked into telling a tale rather than teaching a lesson. And does anyone remember rainy lunchtimes at Courthouse Green when we couldn't go out to the playground and had to read comics (joy!) in the classroom; sometimes there'd be a concert arranged and I clearly remember Alan Kirby always got up to sing "Home, home on the range"; it was almost as good as the version Uncle Mac played on the radio. Walrus, I remember you!

Indeed, Miss Hasten's favourite line was 'I shall smack you and I shall hurt you.' A fearsome woman!!!!

Geoff, that would be you back row right farthest right. I'm front row kneeling, second from right. I miss my crewcut, no longer having the wherewithal. Alas at least four of our number have passed but they were very happy days, I remember all of their names.

I was at Courthouse Green at that time but alas not in that photo. I do remember that wall at the back of the group, corrugated metal painted pale green, we'd queue up against it at the whistle after break and inevitably some boy would run their finger nails down the paintwork simply to create an awful screeching sound.

Were there any streets/roads/avenues that were completely full of houses, all of the way from end to end, that were longer than Sewall Highway? Not sure what house number it went up to, must be close to 1000. Underwoods the Newsagents had a shop in Brixham Drive also. Must have been built 1957/58 time, I guess.
