The one in Lamb Street use to dip a real leaf in silver and mount it to make a brooch jewellery, as my sister had one done for my mum.

It may have been named Silver Street for a short period of silver working but afterwards the property owners probably wouldn't have wanted to go back to being the very pedestrian Cook Street even though there were no suitable businesses left.

Here's a little insight in to how work is progressing. Terrific to see this fabulous building finally getting some Cov-Love. Big grin (Apols for the Ad at the start)

Thanks Morgana for posting this article in the Telegraph. Also took the opportunity of looking at the accompanying article "50 reasons to stay away from Coventry" - that should get them flocking in to this Mecca. Cheers

You're welcome Roger, I thought when they'd seen the 50 reasons not to visit it would be taken off. It's sad that it takes our Telegraph to advertise the city like this and the CCCouncil doesn't.

On 9th Apr 2015 7:35pm, Midland Red said: I always remember that as a butcher's shop, with the legend above the shop front, complete with rogue apostrophe, "Meat at it's best" Oh my
Yes, it was a butcher's shop from the 1930s through to 1960. The shop was first owned by my grandfather John Arthur Beech and then by my father John Edward Beech. Your recollection of the sign is also correct; it became quite a talking point amongst English teachers! Shop in November 1938 Shop in about 1954

Brilliant! I began to think I was imaging it from all those years ago, but now you've confirmed it for me Cheers Obviously you don't have a photo of the sign Sad

How truly marvellous. I thought the city had neglected the ancient building far too long that it would never be restored but now it is, and a good thing too. I hope there will be some prints from Thornton's history showing the LIBRARY which was removed for the building of Hales Street. A success story for once in Coventry when so much that was important is lost.

intrepidexplorer - they are terrific shots Thumbs up Thanks for sharing. As some of you know I've been looking for any images of Silver Street over the years as my great great grandfather George Yardley ran The Turks Head from 1862 to 1874. Again there are very few photographs of the street for some reason - especially pre-war. Don't suppose you have others?
