Served my drinking apprenticeship in the Black Prince in Jardine Crescent. Anyone else remember it?

40+ years ago I used to go the New Inn, near Binley Road, for a decent pint or two, then 100 yards to the trendy Bulls Head where the drink was awful. Then on the bus to town and on to The Lady Godiva (Dive Bar) and the Golden Cross (The Cross). Happy days for the most part.

I can't help wondering why they would name a public house The Admiral Lord Rodney in Coventry. Is there any connection at all ? Oh my

There were also Admiral Hawke and Admiral Lord Codrington! Then again there were Generals Blakeney, Havelock, Lee and Wolfe, Lord Nelson, plus Green Man and The Swan with two necks So I don't think there has to be a direct connection Big grin

Has anyone got a picture of The Green Man Hotel in Much Park Street? If not, any ideas what the style of the building might have been (pre WW1)?

You're not the first person to wonder about the naval connection Dreamtime There was also - within easy walking distance - the Hope & Anchor, the Royal Oak, the Mermaid and the Anchorsmith, all naval references. There was even a seaman's club close to the Rodney. It's possible that the area was at one time a favourite drinking rendezvous for seamen home on leave in Coventry?

There's a planning application to convert the Gosford Park Hotel (Stoke) into apartments... I had a look on Google Street view, and it looks like a typical Edwardian neighbourhood pub.

While in Smith Street this morning I took this photograph, assuming it to have been a public house in a previous life Sure enough, it used to be The Golden Horse Cheers

Terry Downes the ex-World Champion boxer used to drink in The Thistle, he used to be dropped off by his driver in his Rolls Royce. I met him in The Bell in Keresley in the early 90s, he was a mate of John Thomas, the landlord at the time - he loved coming to Coventry
