Morning everyone, As a matter of interest, the photo shown is not even behind the Navi bar, it was taken at the Broomfield Tavern and I did wonder who Marilyn Beales was (shown under photo). However, no harm done. As Morgana stated, can be moved or deleted if desired. Have a good day all. Wave

No worries Adrian, you've done nothing wrong at all. All you did was to upload that photo to our forum from elsewhere on Historic Coventry, which was perfectly alright. Of course, any images uploaded onto our forum by a member get that member's username attached to the filename - and that's how we can be certain that Real Ale Rambles nicked it from our site, because they didn't even remove our own filename!

While trawling through Facebook pages "Memories of Coventry" with my daughter we came across a picture of the Plough on London Road. This set off a very faint recollection of a shooting taking place there 60s/70s? When she asked for more detail I checked here first obviously and then Googled but without success. Is this yet again a dodgy memory on my part or is it possible that someone on the Forum has heard of this happening? I would be very grateful if someone could help me prove that I haven't completely lost the plot. Thanks a lot.

I believe the Herbert has all the old records of the papers like the Telegraph, if you know how to get into it on the web. Not all is placed on the net, things only get put on by others, also it's all to do with what you type into net like e.g you could put 'shooting at Plough Coventry 60s to 70s' and it won't come up yet you could type in 'man killed in shooting or robbery at Plough London Road' and it could come up. I have found this on many occasions, it's what you type in and how it's worded on the page if it recognises it.

If my old man was alive I'd ask him, said he worked behind the bar there for a bit in the 60's, recall him saying they had a very 'colourful' clientele. Famous shooting in 1996 where the victim was incredibly lucky to survive: Survived

Thank you Brother Joybert. It jogged my memory when I saw the bit about being shot up the nose. I reckon that is the one from the distant recesses of my mind Thumbs up

Did they ever catch the named suspect in the link or was anybody 'bought to book' for it but more importantly is the victim still around ?

Went to The Gatehouse, Hill Street, last night for my rugby club meeting. It really is a pleasure to go in there. Good ale as always. Spoke to Martin, the landlord and not only did he 2nd half at Brandon, he signed forms at Long Eaton. If there are any former Caludon Castle Old Boys RFC players reading this, the next meeting is Thursday 24th October. You will be made very welcome (old boys we definitely are. I am the youngest at 63!)

Hi Midland Red , Do you mean the Coventry Cross? Is the 'Mercia' still going on the opposite side of the street and a restaurant/night spot further down on the same side as the 'Cross', I think it was called the Cottage or something? Are the Holyhead and the Styvechale still thriving pubs 7 nights a week or the 'Jules Verne'?

Hello I am trying to establish what I believe was the Market Tavern, where the local traders supped a glass of beer or two after work I recall it stood in the grounds of the market above a fishmongers stall or stalls. Close by I recall there was a road with large metal gates, possibly the road led to the market. If it was not the Market Tavern what was it called? Looking forward in hearing from you - thank you

There aren't any that match your description Tony. The Market Tavern that most people knew wasn't built until 1957, along with the new market. There were market gates alongside the Smithfield Tavern but they were gone by 1937. The Dolphin was very close to the pre-war market but that closed around 1941. There were three main markets in 1948; Rex, Barracks and West Orchard. The main fish market was in West Orchard. There was a temporary pub on the corner of Cross Cheaping and West Orchard called the Ye Olde Talbot but that was more or a log cabin.

Hi. Thank you for the photograph. I find it difficult to visualise the market from an aerial view for I was only a dot in 1948. What I can recall when visiting the market. I went through the Arcade from the Woolworth end. My first stop was Normans the Fruit and Veg stall on the edge of the market to see whether my granddad was there. If not I would make my way towards the iron gates and the tavern to collect rent money for my mother. I am hoping to get further information for you when I get a reply my cousin in Australia - Tony
