Shops of yore

You would have loved both Gosford Street and Far Gosford St, they have ruined it losing the hustle and bustle and community of it all at the same time dividing it away from the city. Then they wonder why people don't go into the City when having to deal with roundabouts with heavy traffic by passing the city lol makes you wonder what brains run the city.

You would not think anyone would call a barbers "Sweeny Todds". It is a bit like a ladies hairdressers I once saw called "Curl up and Dye"

Its our sense of humour how we can laugh at our selfs known all around the world for. Curl up and die is in Bedworth.

Would anyone have a photo of a ladies gown shop Sellrights, in Broadgate area in the 1960s.

Sorry farrell72, I knew the shop well, just by the underpass, I was too busy in 1961 choosing my wedding dress and bridesmaid's dress with a very helpful assistant named Georgina. I think most of the lady members would remember Sellrights but not think to take photos. Good luck with your request.

In my hand I have a receipt from Tile Hill Pharmacy dated June the 25th 1964, for a Rolleicord VB £35 - 10shillings. It is signed by E.Wright. It was at the time the best place to buy any cameras.

Caplans were just halfway up the Burges, and moved to Far Gosford Street, they were my tailor close to Mr Seymour the optician, nearly opposite the Odeon where I and Mrs Arthur had our first date.

What a great thread, I have only got a few pages in, it brings back some great memories. Keep it up I will never get tired of reading about Coventry. Does anybody remember Elds the Newsagent in Moseley Ave, it was the first place I ever worked as a paperboy, 63 years ago.

Hi Arthur it was Sawyers opticians Mr Sawyer was my family optician for many years.

I think Elds was investigated at the time when Sams kidnapped Stephanie Slater and kept her in a wheelie bin somewhere up north. I think it was something to do with a laundry mark that connected Elds with Stephanie.. As for opticians I thought that the name Hugh Seymour well fitted an opticians (you see more). Doubt very much if that was a real name.

Always amused at the name of a West Indian batsman - Seymour Nurse - funny if he married one. Moseley Avenue Shops stayed nearby 1968-75, very useful collection in which to start off two young daughters. Gladdings Bakery, Elds news agents, Boots (auntie chemist) where my wife bought Drapoline, Cuticura Nappies (smooth on the bum - not rough towelling) Baby food in glass jars (?name) and a very obliging wool shop where the lady stored the balls up and doled them out as money allowed. Three Spires Glass just up the road - always handy . Ledbrooks opposite for (economical) bits for the car. Further up shops by the island wonderful fish and chips - but the forte was fresh fish from Grimsby. Was Haywards the outfitters in the arcade (?) at the top of Hertford St. where we used to buy "Old Boys" clobber (Just had a look at my KHVIII tie - but it has no label) also think I had cuff links and an enormous Scarf from there

I've got a Phillips tool catalogue from 1979 consisting of 132 pages. It is mostly fairly high quality black and white photographs of their range but with a few line drawings. There are no prices in the catalogue but there is a separate price list dated 1979 so I presume that the prices were updated without the need to replace the catalogue which I expect would have been expensive to produce. I've attached a scan of the front cover and a random page from the inside.
