The houses we lived in were quite tall, if I can remember properly we had a cellar then the ground floor front room etc then upstairs to bedroom then again to the attic which had massive long windows both sides with a great view over the bombsite etc. They were workshops as you asked but I've no idea what for. It's possible someone on this forum may know, as I said I loved it there. I think the house number was 116/118 Whitefriars St. Hope this is helpful. Also I can't remember when we first moved in or how long we were there. Thumbs up
They were weavers topshops. The more modern houses at the north end of the street had topshops only at the back and these were for watchmakers.

The boy's club was a long, wooden hut, painted green and sited in the lane some distance behind the Hope & Anchor.

Ah, so that's what they were. I don't remember being told when I was younger, but I loved playing in the attic, it was like my secret den. Thanks dutchman for the info.

Hi Pete. They were lovely faces (hee hee). I don't know what the top shops were used for. The cellar in my grans's had two little rooms and an iron stove, we always said it was for the servants of years ago, but gran had her coal down there. Me and Maureen are fine, I live down south, Hayling Island. I come to Cov to see Maureen quiet often. She lives in Styvechale and we are both very happy.

Hi dutchman. I remember the boys club being delivered in the 1950s. It came flat packed with windows in and was left piled flat for a long time before being built. Us kids used it as a play den.

Really glad you are all well, give my regards to your sis. Also you should remember it was the cellar that my dad brewed all his wines etc in. Me, Wendy & mum used to go & collect all the elderberries & other wine making berries. Not sure if you & your sis helped to collect these. It's great when someone reminds you of things that have been forgotten, then you start to remember things. Also I lived in Bude, North Cornwall, for some years as well as West Yorkshire. Been back in Cov about 12 years now.

Would that be from the elderberry trees in Whitefriars Lane? I can remember two on the site of the former GEC factory. They emitted a very powerful aroma and being igloo shaped they also made excellent dens in summer. Smile

Yes I do remember, he used a bath? Maureen jogged my memory. I think your dad went over the bombed buildings to get the dandelions.

I've posted this picture before but for the benefit of members who've only recently joined us these are the shops opposite Courts Nos 1 & 2 in Whitefriars Street: The Black Dog ceased to be a pub in 1923. To the right of it was another pair of weavers houses with an entry in between which led to Court No 3. Note the gratings in front of each house which suggest they were all built with coal cellars.

Thanks dutchman. Great photo, gran lived across from there, that was her lovely view. Alan lived in Court 2. We stayed with gran Mon-Fri to go to St Mary's School. My parents lived in Cheylesmore but I would stay over weekends some times as all my pals were in Whitefriars St area.

I went to Gladding's bakery for yesterday's cakes for the cafe on the corner. She sold them in the cafe and gave me one for going.

Digitally-enhanced aerial view of Whitefriars Street and Whitefriars Lane in 1934. Gosford Street runs left to right in the background while the GEC Whitefriars factory occupies the whole of the top right hand corner:

Is that building on the corner the Hope and Anchor pub? So Greyfriars Street continued up towards Parkside? Someone at work was talking yesterday about a school they went to near London Road. They said it was a nice old stone building with fine gates, but was just demolished for some reason. This same person grew up around the area where the Cheylesmore Manor house is, and said it was all cobbled streets and old houses.
