My mother worked at "Owens" prewar, and always referred to it as that. I think she had to leave when she got married (or had me)

Lol My mother also worked there pre-war and apparently got the sack! The story goes that some 'big wigs' were visiting and in order to keep things tidy she placed a load of saucepans inside a wardrobe. The wardrobe was seemingly sold with the pans still inside (how the delivery men didn't notice either by the weight or clatter is beyond me but that I'm assured is what happened)!

Brilliant Pixrobin, I love it, nice to know that music has not gone for ever. It just takes me a little longer these days to get mine on! However what this has to do with Owen Owen I will never know, but I did buy make up from there on occasions. Thumbs up PS my granddaughter will love that when she hears it.

Dreamtime, Owen Owen in theory hasn't left Coventry as they bought up the company of T J Hughes which we have here in Coventry. So I see it that we still have Owen Owen only under a different name and a smaller shop.

Thanks, Morgana, where would that be situated now then. Owen Owen was always our first port of call when going 'into town' . My daughter walked straight into the front glass doors in '65 and the ladies from the make up counter came to her aid. She had a lovely bump the size of an egg. Roll eyes Wave

Ooh painful, bet she won't forget Owen Owen in a hurry. It's up by where Mr George's was by the round cafe but at the end, top balcony.

The Owen Owen Group also owned a famous old store in Aberdeen called Esselmont & McKintosh which also closed in 2007 when Owen Owen went into administration (and has been empty ever since) although part of the ground floor has been converted into a 'Jamie Oliver' restaurant.

The building was vacated in the early 60`s and P.O.Telephones (now BT) used it for a short time to set up a working display of new equipment for the introduction of STD (subscriber trunk dialling). This included the new pay on answer public phone box equipment.
