The photo is a before and after merge. The full building looks fine. It's only that corner that is a bit odd when artificially placed next to the old architecture. It makes practical sense since the original ceiling heights would have been unsuitably high. Not every old building can be saved... although Coventry has decimated its collection. |

Finally, there was a toy shop on the opposite side of the road to the Palladium and down towards Primrose Hill park. It was in a short row of buildings that I vaguely recall had top shops. Used to spend my picket money there.
Hillfields was a great place to grow up in during the fifties and sixties.
I was tossed out of the Palladium one Saturday morning for shouting. I was only about 6 or7 and I had to sit on the steps to wait for the other kids to come out. My grandma lived in Wellington Street, almost opposite the cinema but I wasn't going home early as she would have asked questions I'd rather not answer.

Hi Rob, I can remember Berdots, a plump woman ran it and she was always dressed in immaculate white cow-gown and apron. Also did a tasty faggot and pea batch, the shop was painted orange and was still going in the early eighties.
Also remember going to the palladium which as you say was locally called the flea pit, I can recall watching Norman Wisdom films in the mid sixties with my brother. I think it was later turned into a casino. There was a paper shop next to Philips Ironmongers which sold lots of toys, opposite which was I think old Home and Colonial shop, selling cooked meats and cheeses. Happy Days when life seemed a lot simpler. |

I think the toy shop you are thinking about was Porter's the newsagents. I remember buying a fishing net from there to go fishing at the Swanswell.  |

BK, I never used it when it was Hillfields Information Centre, but do remember it being a fishing tackle shop in the 60's, and purchasing a reel and tackle as well as maggots in 1/2 pint measure. Can't remember the name of it though, although Smarts seems to play on my mind.
Not sure if it was pulled down with the expansion of Sidney Stringer School. |
