Could this be useful, there are 49 images of pubs, some untitled and some different angled shots that I like because other buildings creep into the frame that you don't always get the chance to see.

While doing some family research on my grandmother I have come across the name of a pub on the 1891 which doesn't yield any information when I Google the name. This is the Woolpack, St John('s) Street and showing a Thomas Ludgate as the innkeeper. This must have been a substantial establishment with 14 residents, including Thomas's family, one servant and 9 lodgers. Does anyone have more information on this pub? I must add that my grandmother wasn't living at the pub, but at the house next door.

The Woolpack was at No. 45. First record of it being open is 1808. It closed in 1929. Its location close to the junction with Much Park Street can be seen in this town planning map from 1888. Both streets are now part of Ringway St John.

I see from this page that this particular Woolpack is not listed. Also there seems to be some confusion over the name of the road, some maps call it St John's Street. On a more personal note, when my grandmother married eight years later she didn't move very far, just a couple of streets away to White Friars Lane.

The original was 'St John Street'. Its modern day replacement - in a slightly different position - is 'St John's Street'.

Then the maps on this site need to be corrected. They show it as St John's.

Hi DBC, I put a topic on here some weeks back because I found some brilliant shots of the old houses (if you put a search on here for 'St John's Street', you will find them). I have probably caused confusion because until the Dutchman put me right, I thought there was only the one street. I have used 'St. John's Street' as a heading for photos that are in fact depicting St. John Street. Over-abundant use of the 'apostrophe' for which I apologise.

I think that St John Street had also been called Dede/Dead Lane in the past, relating to the Plague years. Dead Lane seemed to be used in 1833 for the sale of the Cottage Inn. Pictures of Coventry state that the Inn was open from 1835 but the article I found was earlier. Am I right in all this, is the Cottage Inn in the article, the same as the one in the picture. The article almost certainly refers to the same pub but that particular picture is of a much earlier weavers cottage located some distance from it. Smile

Thanks Dutchman, I can see a pub sign on this one. I was having a look at Much Park Street on Pic of Cov and there are some interesting ones, John St angles on some. The Cottage Inn?

I think the weaver's cottage on the extreme right of that picture is the one mistaken for the pub in the earlier post.

I was getting a bit confused with the sides of the street, The Cottage was No.15, I have looked in John Ashby's book and there is a good angle of it on page 118, to try and get my bearings, I checked on the following link and the building to the right of the ram-shackle one looks like the same as the one in J.A's book but it hasn't got a sign up. I also found some sale particulars of the 'British Queen' at No.41, internal descriptions etc, in the newspapers which was very interesting. St. John Street

This newspaper cutting relates to my great grandmother and her first job. It was published in the local paper in the mid to late 1960's. Does anyone know where the 'White Hart' was? Many thanks Martin North newspaper cutting

Hello Martin Wave The White Hart was in the east-west leg of Much Park Street which is now part of Ringway St John. It was closed in 1959 to make way for the Ring Road. This picture was probably taken just before demolition so the building is in a run-down state.
