Hi Midland Red, Hi all, Wave Do you need lessons for retirement? This is no joke. Employees reaching retirement age at Courtaulds were offered retirement classes. My retirement was earlier than I had planned, as I received major eye surgery, which had hastened my retirement, so I missed out on my lessons. I suppose that a pub lunch is good training though. Oops, I am being beckoned for an outdoor egg & bacon sandwich for breakfast. That's more good training, Hey! Happy ps. It was egg & bacon with tomato inside two slices of lightly toasted bread. Yum, Yum!

Does anyone remember the police officer being stabbed at the Radford pub? The story below needs a couple of holes filling. Me and my two friends were on our way home from town (early evening), when we were approached by two of our so called friends from schooldays, with them were two Teddy boys/men and with the two men were their girl friends. One lad who I knew from school pinned me to the wall and removed my hat (just bought this Frank Sinatra-style hat from American Styles Shop next to the round Wimpy Bar, Lower Precinct - wonder if anyone remembers that?). Anyway I was told I would have to fight him to retrieve the hat from his head. Now while this was going on one of the Teds pulled out his flick knife, this frit me and now instead of a scrap about to take place I feared for my life, gulp. Just over his shoulder I could see my mate Ted being tackled by the other lad, I heard the lad say to Ted "give us that fag or I will smack you one" this bit astounded me big time, he stubbed the fag out on this other lads hand, he then legged it, they all gave chase except the two girls and the lad who was threatening me, he had turned to see the action and I saw my chance. Now I would love to have written that I knocked him out with a right hander but the truth is that I missed him but in pushing by he fell into some stinging nettles. "Sorry" I said as I pushed by and retrieved my hat, lol, and made a run for it. We all got away ok and regrouped near Hill Farm School, Beake Ave. Now coming towards us and heading down Beake Ave was a police officer. He was sure to run into these men further down down by Radford Road. We did not say anything as it was not the done thing in them days (misguided loyalty if you like) anyway we went on our way home. It was some days later we found out the the police officer had been stabbed in the pursuit of these Teddy boys, he followed them up a passage at the side of the Radford pub. From all accounts they stopped and confronted the copper then they stabbed him! This bit I am not too sure of. I think the Teds had robbed the cook shop opposite the Radford pub, the copper spotted them and gave chase, also I am not too sure if the police officer died? I hope someone may remember the incident and fill in the holes. I hope this has been of interest. And still in the pub theme. Just a footnote, how our grandkids seem to make friends with anyone they meet even the older kids today meet and shake hands. In our day if you met a group of kids the first words "do ya wanna fight mate?" How things have changed. Colin Thumbs up Thumbs up Thumbs up

Hi all Wave As a child, I was often shouted at by the landlord of the Devon pub in Sewall Highway as I liked walking through the pub to the garden area at the back. The Bull was actually the first pub that I went into where I had a drink. I was only just fifteen, and had a holiday job in the stores at the GEC. It was Peter Burden's, the chargehands birthday & a group of us all went to the Bull (are you anywhere about?). We all had 'mild' except one young lady who had a black-velvet. Her name was Pauline Sturman (are you anywhere about?). Pauline came from a greengrocer family in Holbrooks & Peter's parents kept a furniture shop off Gulson Rd. Happy times with very nice people. Not too sure if anyone has covered the Whitmore pub, Sadler Road. If I remember correctly the Radford Carnival started from there, I know it finished up at the Whitmore because the pub was turned into a fairground with various stalls etc. I remember it being a great day out and you did not need to have your parents with you just a pocket of pennies. I have some photos of the old pub before it was pulled down, if anyone feels they would be of interest to the topic then please say and I will endeavour to get that done. Colin
