Hi Neil Wave Hertford Square was immediately behind what are now the night clubs in Hertford Place and is now a mixture of grass verge, roundabout and car park.

Hi Neil, it's from 1888 but the area hadn't changed much before WW2 except for the access road behind Hertford Square being widened and extended: OldMaps.co.uk 1937

I just realised, seeing Junction St on the map, that Feast Junction (the revamped Dragon Phoenix) was named after it.

Thanks to Robthu for bringing my attention to the Dutchman's clear map of Hertford Terrace. A good find for our mutual interest in Alderman Weare. Thumbs up

Alderman James Weare. Mayor of Coventry three times 1824 1825 and 1826. Died in 1833 at Hertford Terrace age 68 house number unknown. He was a Seedsman hence is nickname "Seedy" built a nursery up where the Quadrant is now, and from where a tree was moved to the London Road Cemetery (see this story in the Members articles). His brother was murdered by John Thurtwell over gambling debts a very big and infamous case at the time. This family seem to want to be hidden away. To find more than a sentence on them is nigh on impossible.

Just for interest. Hertford Terrace, Hertford Square and Junction Street were erected on the site of land called "Barbers Close" near Summerland Butts, which was sold for building purposes in 1820. The other streets in the same vicinity respectively named Thomas Street, moat street, Albert Street and others were built on the site of fields, and other land known as "Crow Moat", sold for building purposes in the year 1832.

I think you mean "Albion Street" Anne? (There was an "Albert Street" at one time but it was a bit further up). By the way Crow Moat (or "Motte") was an ancient fortification and later a manor house.

Hi Dutchman Have just checked and it definitely says Albert Street. The information is from "Coventry it's history and Antiquities" by Benjamin Poole published 1870

Then it was almost certainly a misprint Anne as it was Albion Street which connected Thomas Street and Moat Street whereas Albert Street was a short-cut between Trafalgar Street and Spon Street the other side of the river and had long been renamed Meadow Street by the time that book was published. Thanks for the correction Dutchman. I think we can excuse them a few errors, it must have been difficult to set the print by candle light ! Roll eyes
