World War I - the 'Great War'

Do any other members have a copy of this memento awarded to a WWI family member? This one was my father in law's. In asking around not many seem to have survived.

I had a couple of family members who fought in that war but I have never seen one of those before. WWI The war to end all wars?... Gimme a break.... Norman

Were they awarded posthumously or to survivors?

My Grandfather (William Oldham) was awarded a certificate in 1919. He fought at Passchendaele and survived the war and died on 11th November 1965 during the 2 minutes silence.

I think they were to the survivors.

Derrickarthur, did your grandfather live Tusses Bridge way, or related to the Oldhams from there?

Kaga simpson. No my Grandfathers parents came from Thomas Street Spon End then Vauxhall Terrace Hilllfields and in 1930's he moved to Arbury Avenue Foleshill. I have been surprised by the amount of Oldhams there are in Coventry and there could be a connection with the Tusses Bridge Oldhams but probably a long time back

Morgana, What remarkable photo's, thank you. When I was a kid, used to go by 'Dirty Hole' as it was called in Shilton Lane, about five hundred yards on from the top of Lentons Lane, This Dirty Hole I was told was a World War I Artillery Gun Range, have no idea if that was the truth, but it did look as though it had been used for that kind of use, any way of finding out? Derrickarthur, Chaingang, When I was a very small boy, I overheard I won't call it an argument, a difference of opinion between my father and a Bill Oldham about a slip of paper and the first world war, both had served in. Now childhood memory can be misleading, but I know the paper was coloured. This would have been around 15 years after the war so I hardly think it is what I'm thinking, but what intrigue, that can never be answered. Derrick, there was a family of Oldhams lived opposite us, I went to school with Bill (son) Paul Guy said his grandma was an Oldham, married a Simpson? The mind boggles.

If it was circular Kaga then yes, it was the test-firing pit for guns made at the ordnance works. There is a photo of it somewhere but I forget where?
