It stems from the vacant plot left by the demolition of Bridgeman's which ran from Little Park Street to Cheylesmore. The plot was a massive back to front L shape that had included the main oblong plot between the two roads (minus a single house and plot on LPS) and an area marked 'bowling green' on the 1750 map. The most northerly part of the bowling green became the end of the garden for Banner House but then reverted back to be part of the factory and saw a road carved from LPS to Cheylesmore. Possibly it was only leased to Banner House or that bulding and its gardens belonged to the factory too. The southerly part of the bowling green had small buildings along the Cheylesmore and was used as a courtyard area with smaller buildings It's the left hand side of this view from the west. You can just see the greenery of Banner House's garden on the left. Note the 2 storeys. The gates you can see in the far distance open onto LPS. Then the 3rd and 4th storeys were added to the front range. The middle was developed and then the LPS side was developed as I describe above. The factory site expanded south (right of the picture) until number 53 on LPS and that was the situation when it was bombed,

Here's a crop of the Little Park Street area from the map included in 1911 directory. It shows Cheylesmore, crossing Friars Road. Never knew that, I think you had to be there to get an appreciation of the layout.

Brill! Thanks, Heathite - as per the Little Palace Yard thread that's Raymond Yardley, one of my grandad's brothers at No.7 Court 20 along with his son Trevor. Interesting to see J B Shelton in the earlier ones as well - I knew he lived there. Has anyone read or got a copy of his book. They are selling for over £100 on the web!

A similar shot to Adrian's first post on this thread. The corner with St John Street, obviously not long after bombing. Plus a rare sight of that previously discussed works on the left - Press Works/Swift Cycles/The Machinists Company etc.
