Interesting. They moved from their pre-war site at 63-64 to Loveitt & Sons former site further down the street at No.61 I'd love to know when they closed as I don't remember them being there at all? (Take Good Care of My Baby was a hit for Bobby Vee in the UK in December 1961)

Thanks Midland Red. Thumbs up It may have closed as early as 1962 as telephone directories were always slightly out-of-date.

I did not think Jill Hanson was in Ford St. It was Paynes, thank you.

Both of these images are from a Coventry 1960 directory. Hanson and Hansons.

And this image is for Hertford Street (same street above, apologies, I missed that out) from 1935. I looked for Paynes Lane, Ford Street and Lower Ford Street but could see no entries for Hanson.

There seems to be some confusion? It was "Paynes" (ie: Charles Payne) who were in Ford Street, no one has suggested it was Hanson. Smile

The Alma! I used to shop there a lot until they closed. I didn't realise they started down on Ford Street. It's a shame that area is now so run down and empty.

Apologies if I've confused the issue, I have just looked up PAYNE's. They are indeed listed in the 1960 Cov directory at number 11 Ford Street. PAYNE, H. (Coventry), LTD., Electrical appliances etc., Tel. 229565

Hi all Wave I bought my first LP from that shop. Holst Planets, Ace of Clubs. The same day as dad bought a new radiogram. PS. When I played it on the new radiogram, dad suggested that the orchestra had lost the music!

On 22nd Nov 2011 1:59pm, K said: My earliest memory of them was as Radiospares when they were selling mostly ex-WD stuff. They had one shop front originally, and then bought next door, where the ex-WD stuff migrated. I think they starting calling themselves REP after THE Radiospares became better known. And, yes, I remember their kits - if you could call them that! Big grin (I had a crystal set as a kid, but mine was an Ivalek). I don't know what happened to them, whether they just closed, or whether they got absorbed into some other business. I started buying bits there about 1959-60, but as I got more serious, went more and more to Barton Bros. Does Barton Bros (Electronic Services) still exist? I know the brothers have been deceased for many years now - they were two very nice guys.
Wondered if this could be the radio spares that became RS Components?

The one in North St also sold tv's, radios and also carried out a repair service.
We, who lived in Stoke Heath/Wyken, were very lucky. We had our own record shop to hand.

Clearly vinyl was very hard wearing. I have 80 singles, all 7" 45's on my jukebox. Many of them, my copies bought 1958/62 when music was real. Music for me started and ended about then. They are still played regularly, and have been played many, many times
