Thanks again Anne - keep it coming! It just seems to have a very ornate entrance for something used as storage.

Sorry Neil, just to intrigue you a little more, from Coventry Digital dated 1980. The doorway is there but bricked up !

Great find Anne. Double thumbs up Is it bricked up or is the gate open and you can see the rear wall of the yard?

Helen, if you look at it on CD and full page, the picture is clearer and definitely bricks. All we need now is a view earlier than that one. Do you think it could possibly be a reclamation doorway ? It also looks as if there is a window on the Earlsdon Street side.

Hi Anne. The brickwork is the same above and below the arch. The bricks aren't in the arch, you can just see them through the gap and over the top.

Within that section now is an outside seating area. I'll take a closer look next time I'm down there.

That's a good idea Neil, it might make more sense studying it on site. Looking again at your 1950's picture iy looks as if the doorway bit actually went into another single story building which was 90 degrees from the bit which is the outdoor area is now. Do you know where the original pub was placed and which way was it facing ?

It was in the same direction Anne and it you look at my post #1599 (what a big thread!) it looks as if it could be an original wall as the footprint seems to be very similar - though I don't think it is.

There's also been this one shared on FB recently of the White Lion - seems to prove that the recently discovered Mosaic was from the earlier Hotel (unless it was inside?) -

Two great photos there Neil. I've not seen either of them. The mosaic was on the outside, hugging the bow window and the doorway. They must have just covered it up with new paving, probably after the war but possibly even before. If you look at this photo of the mosaic taken by Heathite, you can see that it was designed to fit the building. Probably it lost the left hand end that fit the other doorway and that was why it was abandoned. It could have been dug up to lay services? The pavements and road surfaces were redone multiple times over the years, gradually flattening and raising the levels.

Can somebody help me out with the name of the pub as you came down Greyfriars Lane round the bend and it stood on the left hand side in Cheylsmore.

Thanks Helen, for the life of me I could not think of it, even though my Aunt Amy lived in the corner house Cheylesmore / Friars Rd and my Wife's family lived in Whitefriars St.
