Afraid not Foxcote. My records only go back as far as 1874. There is no-one there after that with a similar name.

Hi morgana, Wave I also watched the programme, the detail in the painting of the glass windows was amazing. Does anyone know of any other work of this great artist? Smile

Hi Tricia it was very interesting wasn't it, how difficult for the restorers, had to giggle when they said what was in the original paint but they couldn't replicate it to the same mixture. I was wondering the same how many more he had done, thanks to Tony we now know.

I hope you all won't mind me sharing with you the marvellous talent of Keith West - Coventry artist - and one who is soon to be exhibited in Westminster Abbey. It's good to know that our city can still be well represented in the world or art.
Press Release Coventry born Artist paints Christ in Glory for Westminster Abbey Artist Keith West, born in Longford and studied at Coventry College of Art in the late 1960s, exhibits a 2 metre high painting of Christ in Glory at St Margaret's, Westminster Abbey from 20th November to 2nd December. The painting titled 'Majestas Domini' depicts Christ enthroned on a slab of stone, surrounded by a billowing shroud which suggests the Christian symbol of the fish. The artist does not imagine Christ as meek and mild but a powerful man, a humble carpenter and neither is He crowned, dressed in fine robes or haloed as depicted in most traditional versions. The painting was commissioned by Rector Andrew Tremlett, Canon at Westminster, who previously invited the artist to exhibit a suite of eight large paintings of the Passion during Lent this year. The Passion was first shown at St Alban's Cathedral in 2008 and subsequently at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square, St James' Piccadilly and the Actors' Church in Covent Garden. The artist suggested that "they're on a kind of pilgrimage." In discussion of the Passion paintings, the idea emerged that the empty tomb need not be the conclusion of the set. Although influenced by early Christian icons, it is not surprising that the Coventry Tapestry was a significant influence, especially since the artist had connections with the Cathedral at the time of the consecration, and personally with the late Bishop Cuthbert Bardsley. Since leaving Coventry in 1970, Keith West has been a freelance artist and teacher, exhibiting in group and one-man exhibitions to the present. As Head of Arts at the Camden Institute, he ran the largest art programme for adult students in the country and established the first accredited adult art course with the Open College. His work is unfashionably 'traditional' in subject matter, including portraiture and narrative images based on the theatre, ballet and biblical themes. Portraits include the late Russell Harty, Edna O'Brien, Wayne Sleep and Dame Janet Baker. When asked why biblical subjects his responded; "Greek myths are concerned with the sub-conscious, whereas biblical stories and themes say a great deal about human nature - I feel many biblical events tell my biography.' In 2008 Keith West was commissioned by the Tate Gallery Archive to write a memoir of his experiences as a student at Coventry College of Art in the 1960s. It took four years to research and write and the document accessions the archive in November.

Evening Midland Red, I don't know whether you have found any details yourself about your artist by now because this is an old post. I believe him to be James Everett Kessell (1915-1978), I don't know much about his birth etc but he had a studio in Eastern Green. J E Kessell He is here (No. 10) discussing Coventry art (I reckon anyway, cos I can't get it to fire up personally). Mr Kessell Discussing Art By the way, the apple site seems great, I have that book 'Hurdy Gurdy Days' I think an excerpt is read out.

Thanks, Foxcote, for the information - I'd given up hope, to be honest, as I hadn't found anything myself nor had there been any response The two small pencil drawings are contained in a tiny autograph book which also contains these speedway rider autographs from 1930, which include two of the greatest riders of all time, in Tom Farndon and Jack Parker *** Here are scans of these two drawings : I wonder what happened to the "Cat Series" Oh my *** Not my opinion, but by general consensus across the speedway world!

I have found out a bit about him. His father was from Maidenhead, born 1890, another James Everett Kessell. In 1911, just before his marriage in the same year, he was boarding at 14 Humber Road, occupation, Coach Painter. J E K junior was born Oct. 1915 and died in 1977. There are some reference to him in the phone books, at various addresses and there was a studio in Church Lane, Eastern Green. One other address in the book for 1957 was 19, Clovelly Road, Walsgrave. As for his artwork, I haven't found reference to his education, so perhaps others can help fill in the gaps.
