All the images of the hotel seem to feature that policeman despite the lack of any visible traffic. It would be nice to honour his dedication to duty by including him in Peter's extraordinarily detailed model of the hotel.
On ebay there's a postcard with some close up detail of the frontage, and I'm sure the policeman is there in the middle distance. |

So the figures in glass went missing in 1909, same people turned up three years later as stone figures on the Council House, all bar George and the dragon? |

I am sure there is stained glass in the Council House, apart from St Mary's Hall, as I took a guided tour maybe 35 years ago now, and I think they may be on the staircase leading to the bridge that links with St Mary's Hall, or even in the Council chamber. Can anyone check this to see if it tallies with the glass from the King's Head Hotel?
To find any surviving in Coventry today would be wonderful! |

Kaga, I knew the daughters of Abe Jephcott who was, like yourself, a devotee of Coventry history and fully believed the Godiva story. I made scrapbooks over the years of newspaper cuttings on Coventry, and some of the material came via Jephcott's daughters, though I never met him myself. |

I stood enraptured to the point of tears at the sight of a lovely lady swathed in sables stepping from a car to the kerb, followed by another lady stepped from a majestic hansom cab. The driver behind the cab conversed with the lady through a trap in the roof - the lady wearing a long flowing ankle-length dress of flowered design, with a large wide brimmed hat with flowers round the rim. As they entered the foyer of the King's Head Hotel. I could not help wish I was older, to enter this beautiful hotel that gave so much beauty and enjoyment to the people. |

Not surprised - who would want to buy fake or faulty workmanship, discarded by Coventry's most prodigious building?
The inside of the Kings Head must have been large and beautiful. The barracks band played there regularly. Large open log fires, with ornamental surround. I think there was a large (candle) chandelier of immense artwork, beautiful carpets and velvet drapes.
I heard my grandad describe it many times but alas - memory failing. |

You have found a connection of the Kings Head having snooker rooms. No one's mentioned that before, if so Joe Davis world snooker player in the 20's/30s would certainly have visited Coventry. In those days that was THE sport, like world cup football today. I would imagine it pulled many visitors to Coventry. |

It's entirely possible that the Kings Head might have snooker/billiard tables of its own but I'm not sure about the connection to the sign on the bridge over Vicar Lane. I'm not even sure which side of the road they were located on. However my guess would be the newer building on the east side of the road, which backed onto the hotel. The King's Head Tap on Vicar Lane was more of a wholesale premises but may have been part of the hotel complex. By 1937 a good 3/4 of the buildings in the block bounded by Hertford Street, Vicar Lane and Smithford Street look like they were physically connected to the hotel. So even if the hotel had no snooker tables, a big building to the west probably had. A likely venue for a world snooker player. 
Maybe even the Empire theatre directly to the south could have hosted big events? |

I'm sure we have this added somewhere else but as this is the dedicated thread - the Kings Head building is one of my favourites, so this has to go here. Thanks to Anne - these are the only images I have ever seen of the interior. Sadly, reading the advert these were only a few years before it was all destroyed (seems it had a lovely 1936 deco refurbishment). What I would give for a wander around.

Also for posterity. Not much of the hotel building I know but the closest and best resolution of the period to give the detail image of the building that I have - you can almost see in to the rooms!

There was, of course, a billiards hall across the road, above Burton's
