Does anyone have any pics or info about a coal merchants yard that was situated where Sky Blue Way now runs behind Far Gosford Street, owned by Charles Woodward (my great grandfather)

Is this the Coates being referred to? Taken from 1926 directory, Woodwards not in the directory as Coal Merchants.

Heritage, you could look up my family narrowboats, we had at least ten boats registered, all pulled by horse, mostly if not all coal.

There was A Timms, coal merchants, Ball Hill, now 93, often seen in the Ball Hill area shopping. I know he was over the moon when Binley installed the new showers in the mid fifties.

Heathite, thank you. A George Simpson, after leaving the coal boats, owned the Miners Arms, I think he would be to old to be that one, but could be a relative. In 1880 his father John left the sons to run the boats and kept the Bird in Hand, 1863, his wife ran it 1866 to 68. Enoch, another son, ran the Jolly Colliers,1880 time. Thomas ran the Jolly Colliers in 1888. Another relative ran the Rose and Crown in Bell Green. They all seemed to retire, own a pub, and leave their sons to work the horse drawn coal boats, but it's hard to trace them as they moved and birth cert's are hard to find.

Hi all. Does anyone remember the coal merchants at the top of Windmill Road, Longford? They were in the first house on the left, behind the Ritz cinema. I cannot remember their name or how long they had been there.

Hello John. That coal haggler was Franklin. I remember him with his horse and cart delivering coal around Foleshill and Bell Green. Franklin also had a yard on Windmill Rd near the Green Man and it was always a wonder to me how he managed to carry those sacks of coal because he wasn't a big man.

Norman Conquest. Many thanks for answering my question concerning the coal merchant at the top of Dovedale Avenue as Franklin's. Although not our normal coal merchant, I can remember being sent to Mr Franklin's for coal if we had run out. Funny how one remembers such small incidents that happened over 60 years ago, yet can't remember where I went last week!!!!

johnwright, regarding the coal merchants Franklin, Windmill Road. Didn't they have a daughter Lynn went to Windmill Road School? And I believe one of the Franklin family was a builder and built houses down Aldermans Green Rd in 1939.
