It's been great sharing info and finding more about Spon End. I wonder does anyone remember if there was ever a doll and toy hospital in Rudge Road. This will probably be around 1957-8.

Hello ... I'm new here and looking through some of the topics. This one interests me because my birth certificate (1943) shows I was born at 16 Hertford Square, U.D. (whatever that means). It is signed by Charles George Caffelle. I don't remember the area because we moved shortly after my birth to Hillfields and this is where I spent the rest of my childhood. My only real memory of the Spon End area, as a child, was traversing through it on a bus to get to the annual fair at Hearsall Common, where I enjoyed the rides and my parents got fleeced buying auctioned bone china.

Hello SuMax I too was born in 1943 at Alcock Hospital, so I am registered in Meriden. My certificate was signed by Herbert Brown. I also grew up in Hillfields, Coronation Road. Whereabouts did you live? Bet you used to play in Primrose Hill Park and the Swanswell Park. I attended Frederick Birds School, but my friend Tricia, who is also on this site, went to Ullathorne. I'm sure you will find many topics of interest on here, welcome to you.

Hi SuMax, welcome to the forum and nice to hear from another Hertford Square resident. I lived at No.5 and have good memories of what seems like another age! The square was knocked, as were many streets around, for the inner ring road development. Spon Street and Spon End were very busy thoroughfares in the '50's when I was a child. The fair at Hearsall Common was great to look forward to and enjoy. I recall a dolls/toy hospital in Rudge Road, I think, just down from Hertford Square. Also a toy shop in Queens Rd, do you recall any of these?

Hi Zigzag Zigzag is a good description of the pre-motorway era route to Cornwall from Coventry. The long queues of traffic at Honiton & or Ilminster, depending on the chosen route. It was even worse whilst the M5 was being constructed section by section. My parents lived in Bodmin until 1976. I have many relatives living in Cornwall, the nearest to you is at Gweek. I do remember the pre motorway drive to Cornwall it was an all day if not longer trip. I have met many pirates in Penzance, in fact Penzance holds the record for the most pirates in one place, I think it was over 4,000. Thanks for the welcome.
