My goodness the greed even in researching the dead. There is this one for the fallen from the Coventry Telegraph scroll towards bottom of page link.

TonyS, That is a shame. I read on another link that an awful lot of WWI records were destroyed. Sad

Yes matchle55, they may have had something. I have sent you an e-mail with the Secretary's contact details Funnily enough I was in the Gordon Highlanders Museum back in May trying to find out what happened to a young soldier from Coventry who had joined the GH and who was missing at the front. His parents had placed an article in the Coventry Daily Graphic asking if anyone knew his whereabouts back in 1915. The Museum records showed that he had been unfortunately killed the previous December (1914). A part page out of the newspaper had been posted on the Forum by another Member about a separate item on the same page and I picked up on this story and investigated it out of intrigue. I can't remember which Topic it was now. Sad

Thank you Morgana, it's ok, I have all his war records, I was just pointing out that those provided via the Telegraph website might not be very accurate.

Greed? Not really morgana. The names have to be keyed into a database and then that database has to be maintained. Ancestry, and all other genealogy sites, has to pay people to do that. No doubt the government also charges the genealogy sites for the raw data too. Unless you tick the appropriate box when you fill out the form to be placed on the electoral register then the local authority sells that information to all and sundry. That's often how you get junk mail addressed to you personally.

More like for the poor not to be able to access things. There are genealogy sites free, BT 191 used to be free people finder and access to every name and address in the UK used to to be free, more like governments have found they were popular sites so make money from them. Junk mail is caused by electoral list too, whom the governments sell your information to companies, which states this in a recent letter I received, only if you exempt yourself from the open list you won't get junk mail, as they have two lists. I always thought freedom of information act was just that, free. Lol Lol Lol

David McGrory has been asked by publishers to write a book about the Great War. Obviously there are unlikely to be any first hand stories possible nowadays, but if anyone reading this has any family stories or relevant information that would be useful if published, please can you contact me, and I'll put you in touch with Dave, who will always fully acknowledge any contributions. All the best, Rob

Not sure if this helps. I personally have nt any but have read quite a few over the net from Coventry families in the past, if I come across them again the stories I shall forward, perhaps David could get in touch with them. 1st BATTALION MUNSTER FUSILIERS IN COVENTRY AFTER RETURNING FROM RANGOON BURMA.
