On 18th Dec 2020 11:54am, Helen F said: As the lamps present in the photo, there does not seem to be a preceding letter (based on the two on the right of the photo) but there does look like a third letter (based on the first lamp) and it does look like an E or a B. However the A panel in the second lantern and the first panel of the third lantern are missing the white band at the top, suggesting the panes have been replaced over the years. So potentially the lamps could have had more letters. Until another piece of evidence turns up, I doubt that we are going to solve this.
Any letter looking at it side on will appear as a straight line.

Mick, the angle on the first lamp is more acute than those on the second and third but while the first lantern looks like there is a letter, there isn't any evidence on the others. Not even a straight line.

F J Hibell went on to the City Hotel in Broadgate. He was also the proprietor of other hotels. He was also a councillor but resigned in November 1905 when he was charged with embezzlement and sent to prison for 3 months hard labour. He was associated with several sports clubs and dog clubs so perhaps the initials were something to do with one of these clubs.

I'm sure this has been referenced before but can anyone recall - I presume this was setup whilst the Cross Cheaping one was war damaged - Do we know where it was?

Looking at Britain From Above, it's exactly where the old one was. Thumbs up BFA

I should've guess really Helen! I hadn't realised the original had been completely destroyed.

It wasn't obvious, as I had to check. It could have been the junction of the market with West Orchard. I have BFA set up to start in the middle of all Coventry pictures sorted by date. Post war photos the right, old photos to the left. Few of the old timber buildings survived in the centre. Even on the outer areas those that survived were protected by brick buildings bookending them from other stretches that burned.

My parents used to go there back in the 60s roughly, as well as my grandfather. The surname was Lomas. If anyone knows this name or indeed has any photos of the pub then I would be very interested!
I realise I am answering an old thread, but could no resist this. My uncle Jim died from a heart attack in the Heath on a Sunday dinner time session. He used to live in Beresford Ave and I believe the pub was at the junction with the Foleshill Rd
Sorry to hear about your uncle. I have just come across a photo on this site of the pub, in the Coventry pubs section. I'll show my cad tomorrow to see if he remembers it.

That's amazing. I remember the Heath well, a big pub on the Foleshill Rd, right next to Beresford Avenue as you say.. My uncle was in there most nights, if he wasn't in the Edgwick club drinking. He used to live very near in Fisher Rd. And he too died of a heart attack on a Sunday lunchtime, but not at the Heath. It was at the Malt Shovel in Bubbenhall.

Coventry Pubs got me thinking of how many we have lost over the years since I have been old enough to frequent them. Lets call my area Tile Hill / Canley / Eastern Green/ Broad Lane. From memory, gone are. The Woodlands The Standard The Hawthorn Tree The Fletchamstead The Phoenix (building still there as a Chinese Restaurant) The Dolphin The Peeping Tom (now Hickorys) The Newlands The Herald

Some time back in the 1980s I was having a drink in the New Star when the phone rang behind the bar. The barman answered it then shouted out, "the police are on their way". Within a very short while my mate and I were the only ones still in the pub!

Has anyone discovered this site? They offer a 'colorizer' facility. I've tried it with the above mentioned New Star. Edited by Midland Red, 18th Feb 2021 12:47 pm (Copied to "Computer matters" thread)
