Pool Meadow and Fairfax Street (new and old)

Now nearly every photo on this topic, is the first piece, not the one I queried including Annewiggy's coach scene, now when we look at Helen's yellow dot scene, it's not Pool Meadow at all, it's New Buildings as was, and now called Fairfax Street. Now if someone can check, what year did the new Fairfax Street hit Coventry Planning? Helen. Where you placed that yellow dot, wouldn't that be close to the old Golden Lion and Nick's tree?

This is all getting rather confusing. Helen's yellow dot shows the position where the car-pullers were photographed. It indicates the layout of the modern day Fairfax Street, which is quite different from New Buildings, as the blue lines on the aerial shot show.

No, it's from an aircraft, long before satellites!

From the information on their site, this is the history of the collection Kaga The Aerofilms Collection The Britain from Above website features images from the Aerofilms collection, a unique aerial photographic archive of international importance. The collection includes 1.26 million negatives and more than 2000 photograph albums. Dating from 1919 to 2006, the total collection presents an unparalleled picture of the changing face of Britain in the 20th century. It includes the largest and most significant number of air photographs of Britain taken before 1939. The collection is varied and includes urban, suburban, rural, coastal and industrial scenes, providing important evidence for understanding and managing the built and natural environments. I also need to redo the lines on the aerial photo. While the bit at the yellow spot is right, Fairfax Street follows the river more than I thought and curves more towards the Fire Station after Hill Top. By New Buildings it's about halfway between the river and the millrace. I've added the bit where the two parts of New Buildings join and Hill Top.

So, at one point there is a question about the availability of adequate camera technology/resolution in "1953". Yet, in the next breath it is suggested that the image is from a satellite - that would require even more advanced camera technology! The first satellite wasn't launched till 1957 (Sputnik 1) and I don't think the Russians claimed it was a time machine or that they had spent time flying by Pool Meadow. I only knew Pool Meadow regularly from 1974 onwards - so for me: It's the sense of the abandoned/semi derelict Midland Red side (I travelled on the 747); Catching the #8 to and from Henley College; The overwhelming presence of the Baths, University Halls of Residence, the De Vere Hotel; Sitting on the fence, that separated the Midland Red side from the car park under the Ring Road, and reading the NME front page headline "Roxy Music to split"

Wearethemods, I googled Britain from Above, just googled it again, still comes up with satellite. Have no idea what I'm doing wrong, if anything.

Midland Red And yes that's what I call from above, you never knew what to expect when you got down below. I was flown over similar, did a written test on what I had seen, then shown such, I had to pass such a tough test or 'out', just about six-months before being dropped behind enemy lines. Yes, that was me in younger days. Thank God the war ended. PS yes we also had a psychiatric test.

3Spires said 'advanced camera technology'. Good God, wasn't that more advanced than 53, today kids store hundred of films in hand sets, in 53 your parents stored them in albums.

Sorry Kaga, no, but it looks to me like the 30s though I remember those bus stands/shelters.

Don't think so Prof. I would put it late 50s. There are too many light-coloured cars parked for the 1930s. I think I also see the rear end of the new style Hillman Minx which was introduced in 1958. (Image is of a model at 1:43 scale)
