Midland Red, Next door to the Old Crown was the ghost house, that was turned into an old peoples home, what would happen to that?

Great one Prof, I dare say that would have been during the Wine Lodge days.

Yes Dreamtime sure it would be. No idea what it is today. Once went to a Woodlands reunion there, long time ago.

Have said it before - Larkin would be horrified that a pub was named after him. BTW, I have recently made contact with Fred Luckett, Rob - I have passed on thanks for his great pub site and mentioned that we use if for reference on here with great appreciation. I think you have had contact with him in the past too as I've noted you credited with some images on his site. I am trying to pass on any pub photos I find to him to fill in some gaps on his site. Have also mentioned here and our breakfasts so hoping he may join us.

As far as I know, the current building known as the Philip Larkin was only built around 1931, along with the building of Corporation Street, and known as the Wine Lodge. According to the realalerambles.co.uk website it started out at No. 1 Well Street in 1874 as the Eagle Vaults, which was renamed the Wine Lodge in 1881. As can be seen from the photo on that page, the Wine Lodge in Well Street was almost next to the Old Grammar School - at least 30 yards north of the Corporation Street pub with which we are all now familiar. Therefore, may I suggest that it is not correct to say that the 1931 Philip Larkin / Tudor Rose / Tally Ho / Wine Lodge was the same pub as the 1874 Eagle Vaults? The view below is from Hales Street looking west into Well Street. Corporation Street was driven straight through and the the left of the buildings in front of the photographer, the Wine Lodge being built 30 yards to the left of the photo. Forum image

Rob, you just beat me to it. I have a poem 32 verses long of all Coventry pubs 200 years ago. The Pack Horse was also in Well Street.

Rob, Brilliant, how the bottom of the Burges was very close to Bishop Street (the policeman still there) hard to imagine just how narrow the streets were. I believe Well Street was more important and more used than Bishop Street to Radford people in Victorian times. I read the Pack Horse pub was in Well Street, another book said it was in West Orchard, bit confusing?

Rob's right that the current building on the corner of Corporation Street wasn't part of the old pub scene. The demolition for the new street took out The Wine Lodge and the Unicorn next to it on the left in the photo. It also wiped out the Old Waggon and Horses and the Rose Inn (also known as the Grazier's arms and the Packhorse Inn). Drinkers must have been in lament at the loss of so many watering holes at once. The problem for working out pubs is fourfold - in that there were duplicate named pubs on different streets that were unconnected; pubs sometimes changed their name; sometimes they expanded sideways and/or then contracted but not into the original house number; and sometimes the whole pub moved to a new address. So, without tracing the history of each pub in detail it's hard to say what happened.

The free school - the front faced the Burges but was pulled down in 1794 to widen the road
