The park was opened in 1921, of woodland and fields. In 1927 it became the memorial to soldiers of WWI. My dad was present as one who had taken part, he and scores of veterans had been pressing for some years for such. At the time he heard it would be opened, he heard he had another son - me! So he was highly delighted. PS. I did several carnivals from it, played football and tennis several times in it, marched in uniform, and finally did a marathon from it. Yes, I think the memorial and I have some attachment.

What an eye opener Brother Joybert. I can still remember the old original bird aviary which sadly fizzled out to 'emptiness'. Thank you for sharing a delightful area with us. I hope it will be well maintained for the future. Wave

Hi, He was a lovely man, Ron Owen, (Known as Jack) who lived in Kenilworth. Sadly no longer with us. I did finance work for him & repaired his little boy's Hornby loco, about 1978. Doesn't time fly.

You can still ride on it, Suitably Chastised, unfortunately you have to go over to Ryton Pools in order to do so. I suppose we could arm wrestle them for it Big grin

A video filmed on 10 July 2021 during the birthday weekend celebrations. The Japanese Peace Garden & Community Sensory Garden were open to the general public for the first time - if you want to skip to them they feature from around 8 minutes 40 seconds in or just watch the video below - enjoy Thumbs up

Went to the War Memorial Park this morning. Couldn't get there on Saturday for the 100th Anniversary. Here are some lovely floor paintings I saw.

Is the bandstand still there? I have fond memories sitting listening to brass bands in the park. Got me started in music.....

Question

Lived and schooled in Coventry until 1966

Fri 16th Nov 2012 Neils Yard said re bandstands: Not one in the Memorial Park anymore. Allesley Park still has its crazy golf course. There's a kids playground but it's moved from its original location where the paddling pool was. It also has its Walled Garden from the old Hall days which has a 'Friends' Association that looks after it.

Well that's a shame Prof. Of all places I would have thought a bandstand would have been maintained as it is a Memorial Park after all. It would not have taken up much room surely. Traditions die hard it seems in Coventry. The last time I saw the children's playground was alongside the main road and always thought it was not a very safe place as there were gaps in the hedge, but that was when I was a young mum with two tots.
