Freeth Street was opened onto Cox Street round about 1922 because Bunney painted it with what looks like a low fence or the remains of timbers and wattle. It also led onto New Street under a medieval building that survived the war and the jettied building can be seen in the Historic England Collection. Bottom left photo

Hi Dreamtime, It's certainly looking across at Broadgate, but from just next to the pillars on the side of the Nat West bank in Hertford Street. I think that bank was built in 1931, and the other end of Broadgate (around Butcher Row) was still there before Trinity Street was built. There's also a quite short shadow pointing NE, so my best guess is about 3 o'clock in the afternoon in the summertime between 1931 and 1935! Wink

This looks very much as if it was taken in Freeth Street: Link to Coventry Telegraph reader's picture I don't recognise this one at all other than being somewhere in Hillfields or Foleshill? Link to Coventry Telegraph reader's picture

Not sure where it was taken from but I think the timber frame building is Brightwalls with Victoria Street behind it. I need to study one of the maps before I make any more wild assertions! I'm referring to the third photograph.

The Art School on the corner of Vine Street is clearly visible - I had to scroll right to see it all. The Yardley Street flats are not yet built. I would guess that this picture was taken from the flats that were built in Queen Street, not sure of the year they were built. and the houses that we see in the lower part of the photo are in Weston Street.

Andy McGeechan on FB confirms - "it is taken from Phoenix House sometime between 1959 and the wide scale clearances post 1963." Love the Freeth and New St ones especially as they are in colour!

Something bothers me about the Hillfields photo. If that is Brightwalls, I thought there was a road that ran up the side of it, that went down to Harnall Lane, yet I cannot see it on the photo. Roll eyes

Brightwalls stood on the corner with Castle Street running up to join Adelaide Street and Cross Street forking left from Castle Street to run up to Harnall Lane. The picture shows the Castle/Cross Street side of Brightwalls. Both Queen Street and Weston Street ran into Cross Street. I had to look at some old maps online to figure this out - hope this link will work! http://maps.nls.uk/view/101585008
