Do you have pictures of Parkside Garage please, I served my apprenticeship there from '69 to '73, I've been searching for them when I came across this forum
TIA

Another shot of Gardners on Gulson Road - 60's perhaps? I think this is looking towards where what's called Gulson Lodge - part of the Uni - is today built on the garage site, Charterhouse Road on the right where the car is pulling out from.

There have a been a few mentions on this thread about the Coventry Garage. I was not familiar with it myself and a bit confused by this Ad as it was marked as just Holyhead Road but I can now see that it was an unusual structure on what we now call Lower Holyhead Road, near to the Spon Street Junction - thanks to the Ring Road.
I thought it worth blowing up the photo as never seen a shot of it before -
I think this is the same place NormK mentioned some time ago on the Demolition thread and he added this photo -
Looked an impressive place! |

In the early seventies I worked on the petrol forecourt at Priestley's Bridge Garage and my brother was one of the car sales team there. Priestley's Bridge Garage was part of the Coventry Garage Group and also sold new Rootes and Chrysler cars in addition to having a large selection of second hand vehicles.
By the time I left in 1976 they were beginning to sell Mitsubishi vehicles. My manager was Gerhard Mueller, a fascinating and well liked chap who had been captured during the war and subsequently stayed on after the war's end. During the petrol shortage of 1973 ? I remember him putting out signs on the forecourt proclaiming 'Keine Benzine'. Happy times. |

In the early 80's DeLorean had a UK office base in Coventry. I think I have commented on other threads that I also knew that Chrysler via Talbot etc. also did work for them with parts manufacturing. I seem to recall someone saying the UK Office was somewhere around Spire House on New Union Street but looking at the Telegraph image I cannot place it. You can see the spires, but - anyone?

NeilsYard,
It looks like Christchurch House. That had curved corner offices and there can't have been many of those in Coventry. In addition to the spires I think I can also see the back of what is now Whitefriars Housing on Little Park Street. I could go in the wave and see if I could get the current view, but somebody has built a car park in the way!

Neil...
"... was explained to the Telegraph by former DeLorean managing director Barrie Wills, who now lives in Meriden.
He said: "The DeLorean production purchasing department was one of the first occupiers of Christchurch House in Coventry city centre."

Thanks for that bit of info Anne, makes a change reading some fact instead of fiction these days in the newspapers. Puts my hubby's old 1936 BSA Scout to shame although I like to think that was the second female in his life. |
