When did Sutton's Bakery move from just past Ball Hill to its new site?
Would anybody know?

I presume that the Co-Op had a bakery in Coventry?
Never knew where it was.
Anybody know?

Slash1 It was always in Maudslay Road when my Dad worked there and he went a couple of years after the end of war. It appears to have been Crown Bakery before it was Suttons, there is a web site about Pailes Bakery and it mentions Philip Sutton from Crown bakeries going to Birmingham to collect 4000 loaves after the 1940 bombing. In 1938 F G Sutton was at Crown Bakery Coniston Road, Earlsdon

Suttons was in Maudslay Road, my dad work there.
Co Op was on Torrington Ave, when the bakery closed, it then became a brewery.

I always thought the Torrington Ave building was a warehouse for Federation Breweries, not an actual brewery. My false memory? |

The brewery took on the building after the bakery left, as a kid living up the road we used to buy bags of cakes from the back door |

I think it was Savages bakery in Argyle Street, just beyond Ball Hill, not Suttons. There is more earlier in this topic.

I remember Savages in Argyle St. I also remember the merger of Savages with Suttons. Who moved where after that I don't know.
Savages had a fleet of then modern electric vans which did home deliveries, working out of Argyle St.
Before the arrival of supermarkets, bread deliveries like milk was quite common for home deliveries. The first nail in the coffin might have been, as a rival to the Co-op, may have been the V. G. grocery allegiance. That knocked the price of bread on its head, so making the cost of home deliveries untenable. Plus, we see the emergence of housewives going to work. The final nail in the coffin I believe was the national bread trike. The supermarkets started their in-house bakeries.
That's my suggestion.

Early 1950's I remember "Len the baker" and his horse and cart delivering Savages bread to us in Wyken. |

Not sure about Suttons taking over Savages Philip. Dad always considered Savages to be a competitor. Suttons was in Maudsley Road only from the early 50's. |

Am I right in thinking Suttons and Savages were taken over by Allied Bakeries, Sunblest seems to have some association with their names to me. |

My only recollection of that was seeing the Suttons vans in Argyle St. It didn't last long. |
