Great shot of Gas Street not long before it went - August 1964. Demolition has already started.
I think this is at the SW end, the photographer standing with his/her back to Hill Street, basically looking the same way/view as my earlier post but a lot further along/down.

Does anyone remember the chip shop, round the corner from Gas Street? I think there was a paper shop there as well, and a little store. Question Cov

Am wondering if anyone ever worked at E Laxon & Company during the time that it was located in Gas Street?
Think that it moved in the early 1960's. |

In 1959 I joined a company, E. Laxon & Company, Wholesale Grocers and Provision Merchants, which was located in Gas Street.
Would you remember that?
As I understand it they relocated to Charter Avenue, a few years later, by which time I had left to join the Royal Navy.
I also understand that the area was required for the Ring Road.
Hi Slash. Hope you have a better response this time than your previous request |

A mixture of Gas Street and Laxon's, apologies if they need categorizing.

Great photo, Mick. The Archives often get it wrong. So next to that big warehouse then? (Thanks to Old Maps, when it was available, and Rob)

Thanks for the info Mick. We'll pass it on if Ben doesn't pick it up.

Yes, next door Laxons, opposite entrance to the gas works, the Sherbourne ran alongside the garden. Lots of bombed out buildings to play in. Didn't realise what they were until later. Cov

That would be the Radford Brook next to the house, I think, Mick?
As a kid I used to live and play near reservoirs with bombed out buildings at the dam end of the lowest one. In the stream running out we found all sorts of military stuff. One summer there was a drought and an unexploded bomb was found just opposite our house. Our parents were horrified at what we got up to. They'd no idea all the stuff that was there. We didn't confess until we were adults. |

Neither was I, Gas Centre?!
It's not even in the same spot and more a footpath. Google Maps. |
