Was wondering, would anyone on here have any memories of a Church type Hall in Stratford Street? Was in the 47th Coventry Cubs and Scouts, based in Wyken Way, late 1940's, early/mid 1950's. I am sure that I remember that we had some functions in there? Also, a few years later, very occasionally attending a Saturday night youth club there? Beyond that, for some reason, something in my head wants to connect it to Stoke. Heath school, also? Anybody have any recollection of any of this?

Hi, there may be a couple of related places to your 'wondering'. In the 1937 directory number 59 Stratford Street was a Parish Hall, Elizabeth Elsey the occupier. Just along the road a bit was a Public Library at number 63, Stoke Heath branch, occupier Ernest Dewis ( the butcher family?). I went there in about 1957/8/9 with a couple of younger sisters, for some sort of event with a raffle. I went to Stoke Heath nursery and junior school. One of my sisters who came to the event with me won a prize, she had left earlier so it was up to me to go home and tell her. When I announced to the family that she'd won something my father accused me of skulduggery and mischief. I had to go back with my sister to claim the prize otherwise I'd have got a hiding. She got her prize. So was it still a Parish Hall or a library related to the school? It was certainly some sort of hall capable of hosting events. Over to you Wink

Looking through the newspapers, in the 1980's it was being used as a clinic. An article in 1998 say the building was on its last legs and was to be sold as a development site to raise funds for St Alban's in Mercer Avenue (Where apparantly Pete Waterman sang as a choir boy).

I do recall that place. As far as I understood, it was (still is?) a church hall that doubled as a cub or scout headquarters, but I could be wrong. I've only ever been in there once when I attended a birthday party there in, I think, 1975, for two school-friends who were born on the same day.
