Gail Linnett on FB has allowed me to share this - shows her ancestor's shop on High Street - the 1886 Directory has them at No.8 - "J.Linnett - General Draper, Milliner and Hatter".

Apologies if someone owns the copyright to this one but stumbled across in cyberspace....
My Mum and an Auntie worked in a cake shop in one of the pre-fabricated shops shown.

I remember Waters Wine Bar, I think it was in High Street. You went up a a narrow passage way to it.
I've been searching on this site for a reference to a pub off the right-hand side of a wide alley off the High St. Circa. 56/58, but I can't remember the name. Perhaps too many halves of Bitter. I remember the main bar entrance was on the corner of High street, the barmaid being young and very well upholstered and welcoming, obviously good for attracting passing customers. However in my youth along with a couple of workmates, our time was spent at the top end of the alley enjoying many happy and chatty times with Enid, a lovely lady behind the smaller and slightly quieter bar. I wonder if anyone else remembers the name of the pub?tillyt

This is a (not very good) photo of the Greyfriars Lane/High Street junction before the Lloyds building was built. It shows the side of the Waters building. |

Question. This version of the Bear looks very different from this image on the historic Pubs site - was it due to a face lift/complete renovation or a new building entirely?

Hi Gumnut. I'm not 100% sure but I think that it was all a new build. While there are echoes of the former buildings, there are too many changes to be a refurbish. The street line was pushed back. There were internal details that were stripped out, suggesting that the interior was demolished too. I don't think that the footprint looks the same.
