Bremond College

When we went to school in the 60s, we would take the number 15 bus from Broadgate along the Warwick Road. There were often girls on the bus wearing brown mortarboards who had a sense of superiority about them that meant that you didn't talk to them, even though they were about our age (and we were KHVIII pupils who knew how to be superior anyway). I think that they were going to a school called 'Bremmen' College which would have been somewhere towards Kenilworth. I've often wondered who they were, whether the school/college still exists and whether today's generation still have to wear those silly mortarboards - although I doubt it. Hi Bryn You mean Bremond College which was at Styvechale Manor, Leamington Road, which these days looks this It closed in 1992 - if you Google "Bremond College" there are a number of references to it

My aunt also went to Bremond College, would probably have been in the 50s. It is now known, as MR said, as Styvechale Manor and converted into flats. About ten years ago myself and my husband rented one of the flats for six months whilst between houses. The flat we rented was at the side of the field and when we went out of our back door the horses would come up to the fence for a treat.

If you sat near a Bremond College pupil on the bus, the material of their uniform always seemed to have a very distinctive smell. I seem to remember them having brown blazers with gold or yellow piping.

I went to this crazy school run by Madam Marash back in the 1960's we even had birthday parties for the lippizaner stallion Pluto Erga. I am not sure what sort of education I received there as the teachers came and went very swiftly, does anyone remember poor old Dr Glasgow? We were rather like the St Trinians girls and gave him a very difficult time? It has given me lots of stories to recount of my strange school days and that crazy uniform with brown mortar boards. A colleague of mine taught there for the last few years it was open and she used to collect any scrap or part used paper we had because the school was so short of money. I used to cycle to work along Leamington Road/Coat of Arms and it was always fun trying to avoid the cars as they took swung in and out of the school when the parents dropped the kids off in the morning.

Anne, I think you know the other half of my story or I your story My late wife to be Miss Heather Davidson, taught there in the 1960`s for one year, Speech and Drama. Also teaching was Hazel Lynes (Lines?) and South African Mrs. Maureen Daniels Yes it was CRAY-ZEE

My sister went to this school would have been from about 1953, her name was Pat Beamish.

I was the riding instructor that took over from Wendy (last name unknown) sometime in the early 60's. If I remember Anne Phillips was the head girl. Of course I remember Pluto Erga, the old stallion, and another young Lippi. Mrs Marash was a bit of an odd ball and I felt really sorry for her husband. There was a young groundskeeper, Spanish I believe and a visiting rider from the Spanish School in Vienna, Herr Rolandt. If memory serves me correctly, it was a miserable riding programme, and not a fun school to go to. Saving grace for me is that the students were a fun bunch lead by the head girl.

Never did hear any more to my posting above, or the stuff I put on the Bremond College web site, But your comment Ransewl about the fun bunch students reminded me of a tale my wife told me of her days there. I think it was the 1964 General Election The College held a "mock" election The Head Girl then (I think was P.....D.......?), put up for the Communists. Won it, hands down, to the fury of Madam Marash

I always remember that my French text book at junior school was written by the Principal of Bremond College. Presumably that would had been Madam Marash.

I'd never heard of Bremond until I met my first girlfriend. Her younger sister was horse mad, and used to help out there on a Sunday - preparing the horses' food, grooming the horses, mucking out the stables, and suchlike. Years later, another female acquaintance, when a young woman, used to work there as a live-in helper/maid or something. She said the place was run on a shoestring budget, and that the servants' quarters were remote from the (heated) main building. She shared her room with another girl. There were no bathroom facilities, it was freezing cold in winter, so thick clothes/blankets were the order, and it was too far to walk to the main building in night attire, so they used to pee in a bucket and tip it down the sink. Her room-mate was more promiscuous than my friend, and she said that many was the time the other girl would sneak a boyfriend in, and be engaged in physical activity in the adjacent bed, whilst she pretended to be asleep throughout the performance.
