Hi Not Local and thanks for the info. Is the building still in use or empty?

Would any one possibly have any photographs of Beresford Ave / Fisher Rd, Foleshill Coventry (the Foleshill Rd end) around the 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s before the new road was built?

Hi Philip, it certainly was a specific area marked on the later maps. It's not marked in 1887 but there was a street called Paradise Street with a pub called the Adam & Eve (still there?) but by 1906 it had been renamed Eden Street. In both times the south east end of the street came out at Paradise Farm (or would have but the canal was in the way). By 1937 the farm had gone. The pub is recorded on the pub section to date back as far as 1830. Adam & Eve While there are buildings with references to Paradise, it's not obvious that the area still officially has that tag.

When they built the Paradise School did they change the name of the street to Paradise and change the other one to Eden Street, and when the school closed Paradise Street became Station Street East. Most of our family went to Paradise School starting with my Grandfather in 1906/7 through to 1951 when I left.

I was always told that the old post office (post 213) was the oldest building in the area. I was informed that it was the original Paradise farmhouse and that all of the surrounding streets had been built on what was the farm. This grand old building sits well back from the building line and can still be seen on Stoney Stanton Rd, directly opposite the junction with Cross Rd. It has had an ugly single storey extension built across the front since the the 1970's photograph. Whether it was the farmhouse in Paradise or the old farmhouse in the district which became Paradise I cannot say. It always sounds so romantic to have an address in Eden Street in Paradise and to be able to stroll down to the Adam and Eve pub for a pleasant drink. I think that the reality could be somewhat different.

I get the impression that the Paradise farm came first and the lane was the track to it. The farm was some distance from the Stoney Stanton Road, was cut off by the canal and later demolished. It would be under the A444 now. There was a second farm called Crabmill Farm, after which that lane is named. Land to the south of that belonged to that farm. Paradise as an area was to the north of that. Paradise was to the east of the Stoney Stanton Road on the old maps. Station Street East didn't really exist in 1887 when Paradise Street was called that but by 1906 the street and the school was built and Eden Street had been renamed.

Thanks Helen. Looking at an old map I can see that Crabmill Farm was where the modern Awson Street turns into Hampton Rd. Roughly at the back of the old Crabmill Autos where many of us scavenged bits and pieces to keep our old cars going. Who remembers Des, Dick, and Paul? The major modern building in Paradise is Paradise House the big block of flats which are identical to the now demolished blocks in Hillfields.

I remember going with my Mother to Paradise Post Office during the war. Mr Beer was Post Master. Crabmill Farm still existed into the fifties in part as 19 Hampton Rd. With the Swift family living there.

This is an interesting shot as its shows what I think was the original Golden Eagle on the right - but what was in that great looking building opposite it? On BFA and Maps it even appears to be a works entrance (Castle Motor Works?) and a Textile Works on earlier maps.......

Could this be your building Neil. The Coventry Cross Cycle Company Headquarters on the Foleshill Road from the book Coventry up to date. If it isn't it looks like the same architect.

Brill Anne! I think you might have it there. Looks like a few changes over the years between the two photos and an unusual factory entrance. Great find.
