Hi, I have been working on my Family Tree for some time and it seems that a good few of my relatives lived in the Coventry and Warwick area. I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me out with any information on my 3rd great grandfather Fred Arrowsmith (1818-1891) or his father Edward Arrowsmith (still trying to find info for him). Possibly lived in West Orchard area, Fred married Sarah, nee Sparrow, in Holy Trinity Church in 1848 if this helps. Many thanks.

The 1848 marriage certificate names him as Henry Arrowsmith, not Fred Oh my

The father of Henry is possibly the Edward Arrowsmith who was baptised 9th April 1769 in Loughborough, parents Edward and Elisabeth. This is possibly Edward Arrowsmith who married Elizabeth Low on 28th July 1753 in Loughborough. And again possibly, Edward the younger was buried 22nd January 1854 in Braunstone, age 84. source:familysearch.org

There are approximately 42 Arrowsmiths in the London Road Cemetery.

I'm intrigued at the "approximately", Robthu! Does that mean somewhere between 41 and a half and 42 and a half? Wink

What it means is, I only know up to the year 1972 and some may have gone in after that, but, I like your thinking Lol Derek.

Hi Fred, With reference to the British Newspaper Archive web site, I have found the following... Coventry Standard, Friday 3rd March 1848, under the heading 'Married' quotes "On the 28th ult., at Trinity Church, Mr Henry Arrowsmith to Miss Sarah Sparrow, both of this City." Given that 'Sarah Sparrow' is an unusual name, I also found this which MAY or MAY NOT be the same individual?... Coventry Herald, Friday 5th April 1833, carries a report of an eighteen year old Sarah Sparrow being charged, and found guilty, of stealing several watch movements from her employer, Mr William Hill. "The Jury returned a verdict of 'Guilty' against Sarah Sparrow... Sentenced to be transported for fourteen years." I'm not sure what 'transported' means in this context? However, if YOUR Sarah Sparrow was 33 years old when she married Henry, then this may be the same individual?? Hope this helps?

Hi Fred, Furthermore, and again this may just be a coincidence... Coventry Herald, Friday 5th November 1847, under the heading 'Married' lists the marriage "on the 1st inst. at Trinity Church of Charles Matthews and Miss Jane Sparrow. Both of Coundon." Could this be Sarah Sparrow's sister pipping her to the altar?... only four months between the two weddings?... in the same Coventry church?... and both brides named Sparrow??? Having researched my own family tree, I know that snippets of information can sometimes be red herrings OR, every so often, they can unlock another avenue to explore. Update: With reference to Holy Trinity marriages: 28.02.1848: Henry Arrowsmith (bachelor & a labourer) marries Sarah Sparrow (spinster & a weaver), of Chauntry Place. Henry's Father is listed as Edward Arrowsmith (a labourer), and Sarah's Father is listed as James Sparrow (a labourer).

The Sarah Sparrow that was transported arrived in Van Dieman's Land (now Tasmania) in October 1833 and died there in 1843 age 28. The Sarah that became Mrs Arrowsmith (somtimes spelt Harrowsmith) in 1848 was born in 1824 so a different person. Her parents were James and Ann whereas Jane's were Joseph and Elizabeth, so not sisters but probably distantly related. update: Jane Arrowsmith was a sister of the Sarah that was transported.
