Broadway school was opened on the 16/4/1928 by Mayoress Mrs Low, and Mayor Alderman Fred Lee presented a Union Jack flag to the school. The school finally closed after 50 years in July 1978, each pupil being presented with a Golden Jubilee inscribed pen as a souvenir, the final headmaster being Mr C. R. Schneider.
It was then used by Coventry Technical College (The Butts) for a while, the Principal Mr Aculus requesting 4 rooms due to shortage of rooms at the Butts.
It then became surplus to educational requirements. A group of local residents and business people applied for charitable status, becoming Broadway Community Association, providing a local youth club and using the rooms to support community activities.
In 1983 Broadway School was named The Gilbert Richards Centre in memory of the local councillor.
On the 25th April 2023 a 40th anniversary will take place at the centre 11.00 - 14.00. The Lord Mayor will open the Anniversary celebration at 11.00.
All are welcome. A chance to see the school hall and rooms as they are currently being used.
