Hales Street

I am sorry to say I sent you both on a false trail. I have rechecked my files and I don't have clue where my information came from. Possibly copied it from someone before checking it out. Could you please tell me where was Hales Street - Court 1 House 4. Thank you.

"Possibly copied it from someone before checking it out." Oh boy, we've all done that I'm not sure which was Hales Street Court 1 but I think that it ran north from the Swanswell Gate. It used to be called Gardener's Yard if that helps.

Thank you, I have some work to do. In 1881 my great-grandfather was a fish dealer in court 1.

Looking at the directory for 1886 the names were Anslow, Porter, Asley and Neward. Given that court 1 is next to the person in the gate, it looks like the 4 cottages are the ones at the end of the Court 1 running north, next to the wall.

Maybe no connection but nearby 'fish dealer' was Wakes on the corner of Trinity Street/Hales Street.

That is indeed a lovely rare shot, depicting two sadly long gone bits of old Coventry. I wonder how many of you have seen the series of wonderful articles written by Paul Maddocks about the development of the Transport Museum? Article number Two shows how and why the entrance was created.

I have just re-read all of Paul Maddocks' articles which clearly show his forward thinking, his enthusiasm, and in particular his ability to get things done. Such a shame that Coventry City Council made him redundant!

Paul remains a valued and active member of the Coventry Society. He was the one campaigning to open up the Sherbourne right back in the 80s iirc!
