Intriguing, thanks for that Neil - I don't understand it either. Maybe there was some underlying issue with the building structure that we might not be aware of? |

I can add that, in 1970, it was part of Crest Hotels, as I did a couple of internal audits there that year
I wonder if Ken Dodd did ever pay his overdue bill????? |

Didn't the actor Peter Butterworth pass away in his room there? |

Another great view of Hales St, unfortunately undated here. I can't quite work out how to put a direct link, so you have to click on the 14th thumbnail picture at the bottom. |

Great link mcsporran, thanks for showing. It's a great shame some of those old buildings are now hidden, and thank you Dutchman
for your follow up, most interesting to read as always.

Does anyone know when the Cattle Market disappeared? It's on the 1905 map but must have gone by 1937 when Trinity Street was built. |

Hi mcsporran
I seem to recall the cattle market being merged with the abattoir, adjacent to Grosvenor Rd, but I have no idea when, or anything else. I do remember an animal escaping & causing havoc in that area during the early sixties. Can anyone else help with this?

Picture from Coventry Telegraph archives, was it knocked down due to a bad fire?

Didn't there used to be a theatre/cinema between the school and the Apollo? I'm sure I remember going to see The Barber of Seville live on stage there, and I seem to remember my mother telling me it was bombed during the war while showing Gone with the Wind. She never did see the film all the way through. |

Before my time but I have the feeling it was called The Opera House. I have a print of a painting somewhere of Hales Street showing it with a tram going past at night. |

That's a good picture Mr Dutchman.
Here's some info, a bit messy but I'm trying to save space.

There was a digger excavating a flipping great hole on the corner of Hales Street on Wednesday. It was full of water. I think they've found the mill pond. |
