Raglan Street

Hi Nova Did you know that from Leicester, there as a fabulous frequent direct bus service (X6) to Coventry that comes along the M69 - De Courcey Travel I use it often to go to Leicester. It stops at Fosse Park, & Coventry's main hospital so no matter how you are feeling you are covered. I say this because the area in Coventry that you are looking at is ten minutes walk away from the bus station here. There are good eating places nearby, you could have a carvery in the Britannia Hotel next to the bus station that would not break the bank, or just a snack in the museum cafe, all close to hand & I use them. I would never tell anyone to go where I did not like. So, there you are, a tour brochure into the bargain. Hope it all goes well with your project. I might ask you questions later, so pay attention. TonyS. Unfortunately yes, the work is boring. It all seems unrelated to what the final goal should be. I don't mind it as much now as I've had a chance to look back on where I grew up. As for coming back to this site, I can't even remember how I came across it but look at it quite often, just a little bit less vocal than everyone else Philipincoventry. Most of my family are in Coventry so come back most weekends Usually just get the train. I must say the past few days I can't stop reading the posts on this site. It had the word GLASS in huge letters on the roof if I remember correctly? I could see it from my back garden in Gosford Street provided I balanced on top of the wooden post which held the washing line, which wasn't easy!

My great grandparents supposedly ran the Foresters. I believe they were Tom & Edith Hands. The date would be around the 1930's. If anyone could confirm this I would greatly appreciate it

Raglan Street I'm not sure about but many of the nearby street were built specifically for weavers with a third-storey 'topshop' and huge windows:

The photo is how i remember the Brook St area to be. Raglan St had a few three storey buildings but not like these. These were positioned from Canterbury St, on the left going towards East St. Mostly the houses were 2up, 2down with a small kitchen and outside toilet slung on the back as an afterthought. Mind you, this was better than across the road. The houses that backed onto Alma St, you had to go out the back door, across the footpath that ran along the back of all the houses, then step into the kitchen. Even this was luxury compared to the houses down by Vauxhall St, they had communal toilets, half of them had bomb damage and were never repaired so there were twice as many people to each toilet. At least the back room in these houses served as the kitchen, but they had lost one of their rooms.

This photo reminds me so much of a shop in Brook Street, opposite Vernon Street. Although having said that, most of the shops and building were similar around that area.

Yes it is a great site, Phil - and people do seem to matter on here. As well as all the history, of course!

I suspect the late 1850s as Lord Raglan died in 1855 shortly after his victory in the Battle of Inkerman. This also fits with accounts of other buildings in the area.
