Back in 1980 I was in a band called the Accused, and we played a gig at a pub around Coventry somewhere called the White Swan, it is often mentioned in band circles, but I cannot for the life of me find it online. I would love to know if anyone remembers where it is or was. All I can remember is it was in a slightly countrified area just off a main road and stood on its own with a large car park to the right hand side. It had bands play now and again but there was no stage, the bands just cleared the tables out of a bay window area. Can anyone please help, many thanks from Paul |

This pub used to be called the White Swan, but it's in the City Centre, on the corner of White Street & Swanswell Street.
I remember seeing bands playing here in the late 70s/early 80s.
Don't look around to find the sound that's right beneath your feet

Ghengis. If that pub used to be called the White Swan it must have been well before 1980. I was bought up in the area and always knew it as The Swanswell Tavern.

The building in the photographs was the White Swan from 1980 to 1988, after which it became McGuigan's Bar. |

Thanks for the correction. I passed the pub every day for years, and never noticed it had been named this When Paul mentioned main road he must mean the Ring Road and the countryfied location must be the Swanswell Pool itself.

Thanks for responding everyone, but the pub I mean, and played at definitely was not the Swanswell Tavern. It wasn't in a built up area at all, I'm guessing it was just out of Coventry somewhere, and has probably now gone maybe, but in 1980 they had a few gigs now and then, of which ours was one, the pub called White Swan as I remember stood on its own, it was a large pub with a side entrance of the car park, it had a proper roof (ie not a flat one) and large bay windows at the rear. We played on the floor in one of these recesses. Our set was interrupted by a stolen car being set on fire in the car park which in turn set off the fire alarms and a fire engine duly arrived. The only other mention I can find of this pub online is in a blog by Coventry based punk band Criminal Class who mention that they played there too. It's driving me mad, wish I could identify its location, any other help much appreciated |

Have you tried contacting them? Or are they in the same position as you, and simply can't remember? |

White Swan, Shawell, just off the A5?
White Swan, Stoke Golding?

Hello everyone, I am a new member so please bear with me. The White Swan was situated next to the Swanswell Inn opposite the Fire Station next to Lady Herberts Garden by gatehouse, I feel I am correct but at my age I could be wrong.

Think that was the Swanswell Hotel. Was demolished because it was in the way of the proposed ring road.

You're mistaken Norman.
The Swanswell Hotel continued trading until 1998 when it was known as "The Inn Place" and wasn't demolished until 1999.

Demolished and left as an empty space! They had a shark in a tank in that pub, once.

It was the Swanswell Cottage in Leicester Street which was demolished to make way for the Ring Road Norman.

A very rare view of the original Swanswell Tavern taken from Swanswell Street looking south towards Cox Street and the junction with White Street.

Another good one from Dean Nelson on FB. A rather bare looking Swanswell Street with the Swanswell Tavern showing at the end. I presume war damage removed most of the buildings along here that we can see in earlier images on this thread. Wasn't the short lived Jubilee pub built on the scrub land? I think it may have been taken from Phoenix House which was one of the first high-rise blocks built - anyone know what year as I think it may have been pre-1960?
