Hi, does anyone have any pictures of either Coundon Primary School or Coundon Court Comprehensive from the 1940s or 1950s? My mum went to school there, primary from 1949-1954 and secondary school 1954-1960. I'd love to get some photos together for her as she doesn't have any, so please get in touch if you have! Cheers

I am sorry I do not have any pictures of the old school apart from a class photo in my final year in 1956. I have been in the entrance of the current school and there are some old photos displayed there. My photo of Miss Briggs' class shows there were 49 of us and I have a recollection that in 1950 when I started the class sizes were even larger. They reduced circa 1952/3 when St Christophers and Hollyfast primaries were built.

Just spotted some old photos on the Coundon Primary website and remembered there was a thread asking for some a while back. If you're still on here, hope this helps.

Hi, I have a photo when Coundon Court was my mum's home. They sold it in 1954 to Coventry Council. I also have some pictures of inside Coundon Court as a school. I could probably email them to you?
Sherry.

At about 5.30pm this evening there was a short 15 minute film on the Talking Pictures channel on TV entitled 'Keeping Britain Tidy'. It was about various schoolchildren around the country in 1962 taking action about litter. Coundon Court school was featured and showed the girls in a play and wearing their uniforms including their grey felt hats (not berets). Also shown was The Precinct. It was a perfect gem!

I managed to catch this programme the other day. I have found reference to it in the Coventry Telegraph and it was filmed in 1961 and some of the girls went to a premiere of it in London. I was at Coundon Court 1958 to 1963 and can't remember anything about it. The line of girls parading through the school look very smart, dressed up specially for the occasion. Also I don't remember the hats, I thought we only ever wore berets, and God forbid if you were ever spotted out of school in uniform without your beret! I still haven't placed where they were walking in the school. Gave me a lot to think about.

After George Singer died his widow moved with her son-in-law and daughter to "Broadwater" in Styvechale and eventually moving to 25 Harley House, near Regents Park in London. Coundon Court was sold to Charles D Miller and his wife Bessie, owner of Newdigate Colliery in North Warwickshire. Charles Miller died in March 1944 and his widow inherited. Bessie died in 1947 and the property was sold by her heirs to John Harold Finn, a caterer who owned a restaurant in Queen Victoria Road. Finn improved the property. He installed an operating theatre with an idea of helping soldiers or turning it into a care home. When he fell on bad times Coventry Council placed a compulsory purchase order on the property and it then became a school. This information thanks to the book "Singer's Legacy, his family and his home" by Richard Hoare.

Hi Anne, Loved reading your post, I was at Coundon Court 1967-1973. Your comments reminded me of the uniform, Peter Pan blouses, cream with green piping, and brown plimsolls! Grey pleated gaberdine macs, and those infamous berets! And of course the dread of being caught out in some misdemeanour by Miss Foster! Happy days! Kind regards, Liz (nee Cramp). Wave
