Several artists captured the pillar, including Dr Troughton (see Rob's pics), but this is the full photo. Originally the ground level was lower and seems to have built up on the left side of the garden. The location wasn't far from the route of the Radford Brook and may even have sloped the other way. The foundations of the school look lower. Unless there is a bigger base than is apparent it seems unlikely it's in its natural location. The survival of the stone means it may have been excavated and re-assembled.

Aha, I saw that pic when you posted regarding the Unicorn but never noticed the column 'stump'. Any idea of the date of that pic?

There's not a huge amount to go on, datewise. It's before the Opera House was built, so pre 1889. It's Wingrave, so early 1860s onwards.
