Hi, I am new to this site and really taking a stab in the dark to see if anyone can recollect the motor accident that occurred on the crossroads on Sewall Highway between 13 year old cyclist Ian Makins and a van or car?

Hi Kate, welcome to the forum. Wave I can't help but some here have access to historical newspapers or may remember something. Could you give us any idea of the rough date?

December 3rd 1962. It was a foggy morning apparently. Ian sustained serious head injuries but survived. He was my uncle and I am doing a lot of research on family for my mum, who was then Janet Makins.

Hi Kate, I lived a few doors down from Ian and Janet at the time of the accident. I was 15 at the time and had gone ahead on my bike on that foggy morning. We heard about Ian's accident when we got home. I seem to remember it was a teacher that actually knocked him off his bike. He made a good recovery thankfully. I remember many years later bumping into him, in the Millpool pub a few times, we always spoke to each other. Can't remember any specific detail about the accident but it was reported in the Coventry Telegraph. Please give my regards to Janet. My name is Richard Osborne.

I have had a good search in the CET but I can't find anything for that date or name. I have looked through the papers around that date, there was very bad fog, but sorry, can't find anything about the accident.

Hi Kate & Anne, It's small, but I found this in the Coventry Evening Telegraph, Monday 3rd December 1962, page 13: Coventry Cyclist 'Rather Ill' A 13 years old cyclist, Ian Makins, of 513, Sewall Highway, Coventry, was in a collison involving a van outside his home today. He was taken to The Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital with head injuries and was stated to be "rather ill." The same article featured in the 'Last' edition of that day's paper, but had moved to the bottom of page 8. Hope this helps. OddSock

Hi Richard Thanks for your response, it was a teacher who knocked him off his bike. He did recover but was very poorly for a while. I will pass on my regards to mum (Janet) Kate
