Hello, one of my strong memories of my childhood, apart from the corporation buses, was Goodwins extra self raising flour. I was brought up in Perkins Street as a young child and went to Wheatley Street School and I remember Goodwins vans were blue with their advertisement on the side. I think they were Guy vans. I have been trying to find a photo of one even in the national magazine "Vintage Roadscene", but it seems as though those vans have gone forever with no photos anywhere to remember them. PeterW

The name GOODWINS was a prominent feature on the roof of the building. Wave

No van I'm afraid, but a great photo of the Coventry flour mill can be found here. Smile

Seeing the photo of the flour mill reminded me that when we demolished it I was patrolling the pavement to stop people walking past and a piece of wood from the roof fell and I got hit in the mouth and snapped off my two front teeth. I have dentures so how could I ever forget that place.

The building in the background was once a flour mill but when I worked there as a lorry driver it was Goodwin Foster Brown wholesale grocers. Les Post copied from topic Wheatley Street School on 27th Dec 2021 9:24 am

Here is a family sepia photo I have which is said to be the Coventry Master Bakers Association float outside Coventry Flour Mill in 1897. Has anyone got any information about this please or where the building was situated. Thanks

The picture looks to have been taken from the western end of Wheatley Street.

Is that the same building as Gillian's post number 8. An article about a Mr James Groom who died in 1965 says he was former manager of the old Coventry Flour Mills, Robbins and Powers.

Well spotted Anne. You can see where a door with a pointed shelter was removed and a window put in.
