Yes, great shots although, Helen, I cannot get my bearings from where the first one was taken.

Britain from Above Start at Cox Street and walk west along Freeth Street (parallel to New Street). The street then turns north and comes out at New Street. The photo was taken from Freeth Street looking towards where it turns north. The picture in post 9 is where it comes out on New Street, about half way along. In TSP's photo, the building directly to the right of the one with the people in front of the door is the one to the right of the picture in post 9.

This is from a book of sketches in the box I bought from Stan Beasley. They have no artists name on them.

Anne, if the sketches aren't by Troughton, they're copies of them. I've seen the pencil version of this view in the Herbert collection. Thumbs up That confirms that the West Orchard sketch that I haven't see at the Herbert might be the only copy in existence.

I think you are right Helen. I have just compared the sketch in this book with the Troughton one in his Sketches of old Coventry book. Maybe Stan did them himself. There are several sketches of West Orchard in this book. Have I already sent them to you?

I am sure the Troughton drawings are featured in the book (I have a copy) Coventry Past and Passing, which was a limited edition. This has been mentioned in another post somewhere.

It's a great book with sketches by Samuel Lines that are amazing. There is a book of Dr Troughton sketches and the Library collection has even more. However the Herbert has many, many more but Anne has one or two that don't feature in the original collection. There are still a handful of Troughton views I can't place on the map.

Here's a more unusual 1950's view along New Street. Most images seem to show New Street looking east but this one is looking west towards St Michael's Avenue/the Cathedral. It's not too clear on the uploaded image but you can see the wooden brace at the western end in the distance which is on other photos in this thread. The image text states Austin Devon and Austin Somerset cars are parked nose to nose outside Charles Hill the Publishers and Printers.

There aren't many showing the south side of the road, either. Thumbs up

Some recent Cov Archive uploads of the clearance for the Alan Berry Building, which is the main entrance to the then Poly/now Uni. I'm just trying to work out the orientation of this, if anyone can assist, given the properties behind - is that Cope Street or New Street? If it was, the old graveyard would have been in that spot. Constructed in '63 apparently.

Woo hoo! Gold star to Neil and Coventry Digital - this is New Street looking south. The bit I was missing! Freeth Street entrance would be off to the right. The graveyard was a few doors to the right also. As was Miller's Alley. The first car in post 25 would be in the centre of the picture of the street in post 27.

Hi Helen, So the building, located to the right of centre in the picture (with the car parked outside), is that of Charles Hill the Publishers and Printers, as described in post 25 - that's right, yes?
OddSock: Particularly interested in the family surnames Cowley, Shale, & Pratt in Coventry!

Afternoon Oddsock. The one with the sign and the double frontage is the printers at number 48, I think.
