Looking through the newspaper archives Neil, the roof was damaged by an IRA bomb which blew up a manhole which went through the roof in 1939. It later was destroyed in the blitz. A new one was built in 1961.

Thanks Anne - think I prefer the original.

And I, Neil. According to an expert I know, the original is reminiscent of Pugin's Bishop's House in Birmingham which was the victim of St Chad's Ringway in the 1960's. Rob, he asks of me "Do you have the original of that image of St Osburg's Presbytery?"

It's in the 'Library Pics' section on the left, Prof if you want a copy. I've listed in another thread before about other amazing buildings lost needlessly in other places like Brum. Looking at maps, Anne, the Presbytery appears to be showing on there post-war - did it stand in ruin until the new one was built?

Don't know Neil. The only other thing I can find in the newspaper is mention in 1952 of a Cardinal walking from the Presbytery, Meriden Street, so they must have had a temporary one. I have come across this which was posted on a site in 2009 by Dutchman! Unfortunately there does not appear to be a Britain from Above view of Upper Hill Street

Thanks Neil, I've now found one or two there. Thank you too Anne for the bombed Presbytery, all of interest to my contact.
