Hi all I need updating on this nowadays, but for many years, whilst our local water supplies were topped up by Welsh water, most of Coventry's water came from drilled wells. The restored building in Watery Lane was a pumping station for our district in Holbrooks.

The central areas of Coventry are still supplied from deep wells but the outlying districts are supplied by pipeline. You can tell from temperature of the water, it's always freezing around here even in Summer whereas in Willenhall the water is luke warm.

There was a well in Well Street outside the Old Waggon and Horses which was on the south side east end and another in St Agnes Lane about half way down on the west side.

Thank you Helen F I was reading about Well Street this evening. Well Street, 12th century, extended from corner opposite St Johns hospital to Mill Hill. The family De Fonte held capital messuage by the well which lay on the south side towards east end of the street.

It was known as the 'Broadwell' I believe. There was also a 'Bridewell' behind St John's church.

Philip mentioned Watery Lane. Whilst I was carrying out research for the 'Spotlight on Keresley' exhibition at Bedworth Heritage Centre (on until end of May and well worth a visit) I found this piece in the Coventry Graphic. Usual very poor image from the Graphic, June 1914, but it refers to flooding in Watery Lane caused by large volumes of water from the sinking of the new Keresley Pit. So much water came from the sinkings I was wondering where the water finished up. Several pumping stations in the general area, Watery Lane, Corley, Scots Lane, probably more when the thinking caps go on.

Surely though Dutchman is not a Bridewell a lock-up?
